Gettin' back to the builds on the two lap steels after a few months off.
Got everything ready now to route and drill for the parts to attach.
Then it will be the final sanding before the gloss lacquer finish.
That finish should bring out the curl in the maple and walnut as well as the walnut burl peg head veneers.
Sorry the photos are just with an iPhone and not professional lighting
I still need to make the bridge. That will be just a 3/8" round aluminum rod with screws through
the first two holes in the bridge plate. Easy to do.
Decided to add this better photo of the fretboard.

Thanks Rick,
Bet you love your Clinesmith?
I sure like the three I have, so these I'm building are just for fun.

Lookin good Andy...............is that a Lace Pup? Which one is it? I have 3 now and really like them. I use the P 90 Riffian and I'm sure it's wide enough for 8 strings. _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |

I liked the New Yorker and that was the starting point.
Made changes to the design to suite my own taste. The peghead is wider so the 1st and 8th string don't rub on the posts of the 2nd and 7th strings. Thats something I never like to see. Also added two more stair steps to the top of the peg head,
The side sections (Wings) each are 1/8" & 1/4" lower than the middle to make it more 3 dimantional.
More Deco in style.
One of them has a 22.5" scale and the one in the photo is longer with a 24" scale.
This photo was taken at the beginning of the project.

Hi Bill,
Not sure about the Alumitone? Bought them from two members of the forum.
It just says it's for a 10 string PSG steel. But mine have 3/8" string spacing so wider than some and very close to a narrow spaced standard PSG.
I had wound a couple of pickups and they seemed okay, but not quite the tone I was after so for now will use the Alumitones. Wind more later I think.
I expect I'll re-wind these two later to see what I get? _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

To Joe Elk,
You said "Makes me want to throw mine away! " Thanks, but don't do it!
I'm semi retired and working slow. Also have a lot of instrument projects going now, too many for my age.
Also: Thanks Rick, Glenn, Bill & Phillip.
45 years ago (January 1975) one of my early guitars I built for Chris, the main singer in our band, Crazy Creek.
Last summer when I visited him it was in bad shape, loose braces in the back, neck broken and needing to be replace. Also needed the top and bottom blocks reinforced.
Just finished re-building that and refinishing it for him. Had to cut the back off to get it done right.
I'll deliver it to him in Riverside, CA on my way from Oregon to Dallas for the Steel Jamboree in March. I think he will be thrilled because he always loved that guitar.
It sounds real good now and looks almost new again. The finish is better than it was in 1975 now. I was not very good at that back then.
Could not salvage the old fretboard so copied those inlays. Also had the problem that the old one had his name in Ivory from a piano key. Its no longer legal to take anything with Ivory across a boarder and doing so would risk having the guitar impounded as well as a sizable fine. Did the new name in White Mother Of Pearl.
This was our band about 1974 and Chris is in the center with the third guitar I'd built...

Some nice looking work there, Andy. And you KNOW that I'm going to like the look of that steel you're building. Here's my 8-string Maple/Walnut build from a few years back - also inspired by the New Yorker. Great minds . . .

Ha ha ha... Your right David!
Looks like were were both influenced by the old Nationals & Bigsbys.
Maple & Walnut from PA Bigsby and the general look like a National.
Would you believe I even considered a stair step peghead at one point.
I prefer the tuner buttons sticking up on a lap steel, But decided I liked the look of the National better.
I'll attach some of my working drawings.
For now I'll use the Alumitone Pickups but, hope to replace them when I get a pair wound closer to the Bigsby tone.
Funny thing is I woke up this morning thinking about the finish and decided to give them a light amber tint to get the aged look on the maple. Never did like the "Whitness" of plain maple until it get a little older and more amber.
Best wishes,
Andy
