Howdy, does anyone know where I can listen online to a Clinesmith lap steel with the Joaquin Murphey pick up?
Thanks!

Thanks Todd!
I'm hoping to get one of your 8 string lap steels in the near future, but not sure which type to get. Joaquin Model? Cast Aluminum? Horseshoe pickup?

Had the same "problem" a while ago. Listened to the same sound samples, liked them all and in the end picked the Joaquin with a blade pickup rather at random. It proffed to be a good choice but left me still in need of a frypan with a horseshoe. Well, I guess you cannot have everything - or it just takes more time...
BTW, Andre Hakwinsson has some great YouTube clips with a Joaquin model and blade pickup. |

Fantastic - very authentic! Love the band and the steel playing!
Question: What scale is the Clinesmith Joaquin? |

Thanks Tim, That was a fun band to be in.
The Joaquin scale length is 24 7/8.
I would consider my horseshoe pickup to achieve an authentic Joaquin Murphey tone, since his main guitars (1944, and 47 Bigsby's) in the day had horseshoes, that are very similar to the ones I am now making. _________________ face book page:

Thanks Ethan,
I used a 52-53 Fender Pro. I had a love hate relationship with that amp. It could sound very nice like in that recording. But toward the end of a gig it would sag, and get a pretty distorted tone. Some folks loved that but, it drove me crazy and made me play very chordally toward that time in the evening, as single notes were too muffled.
It is evident on a song or two on that Barn Door Slammers record. "Tippin' In", comes to mind , as not my ideal amp tone.
I ended up selling the amp. _________________ face book page:

I have 3 amps I really like. A Standel 50L15, a Rickenbacker M-15 and this Pro copy with a 12 inch speaker .
The pro head was made by Brent Martins for my friend Russ Blake who modded it a bit and dialed it in. It has a Cathode/ Bias switch for clean tones at high volume or a bit of more pushed tube sound at lower volume. I made the cabinet for it out of Curly Douglas Fir.

That looks great, Todd.
I like the idea of the old classic designs with fresh components so the old worn-out parts don’t konk out once they get warm. I’ve built 4 late 50’s Fender models and a ‘63 Vibroverb all for my own use. I have both a TV front 1x15 Pro cabinet and a 2x10 Super cabinet I can swap a chassis between. I find for barroom use, I like the 5F4 2x10 Super setup the best.
Don’t mean to derail the topic, but my Clinesmith guitars sound pretty special with my 50’s style replica amps. _________________ "The Masher of Touch and Tone"

Hey Todd does your guitar have the horseshoes in this clip? I can't quite make it out in the video. Sounds like horseshoes to me I think? Sounds amazing!

Just want to chime in and say that Todd's album is still available at CDbaby, hard copy or download. Anyone who loves western swing or just good steel playing should grab it, seriously:

I just saw this clip today and thought of this thread. It's a great reference for anyone wondering what the Joaquin model sounds like. Solo is at 1:57. Man what a tone.
