I spent the day in Oceanside yesterday at Jim Palenscars shop having my recently purchased 91 ZUM SD-12 gone through.
Jim changed it over from 7/5 E9/B6 to Extended E9th w 5/5. He went over every part of the guitar and when he got done it was like I just got a brand new guitar!!!!
It took all day, in fact he stayed at it for 2 hrs past his normal closing time making sure every pedal and knee lever works perfect and exactly how I wanted them to hang and feel. It was really nice to have someone with his expertise making it play so well. I would highly recommend that if any West Coast picker wants some work done, to give Jim a call.
This was my first trip to his shop, but it will not be my last. Thanks Jim.

Yes, Jim is a gift to us west coast folks. He did a set-up on my Sho-Bud, and it's better than ever. He is a super cool, super nice guy, and his shop is awesome....I don't think there are too many folks or shops that can compare to Jim and his shop. Thank you, Jim!

Yep, Jim does first-rate work. He's done mods to my Mullen D-12, and a serious makeover on my Carter SD-10. Plus work on many of my students' steels, they've all been completely thrilled.

Cliff Kane, haven't seen you in ages, ring me up one of these days!

Thanks so much for the wonderful comments guys. It really is an honor for me to be able to work on these guitars- they are so awesome and the sound that they are capable of producing just simply rocks my world- and has for the past 35 years. Everyone seems to like something a little bit different in their setups- like adjusting the seat in a car- and it's really not all that tough to accomplish (usually)- the smiles that come from things being just right is my reward.

I was at Jim's store last week. Cool place. I just wish it was closer to where I live. (It's about 90 miles away.)

But then again, if it was closer, I'd be hanging out there all the time and never get anything done.

Ome of the cool things I saw at Jim's store was a very old MSA D-10 that was built out of transparent acrylic so you can see all the inner workings.

I had heard about this guitar previously, and had been told that the acrylic body wasn't very resonant, and the guitar was strictly for display purposes and not meant to be used. Plus, it weighed 2 tons.

I gotta say though, it really looks cool.

Hey Reece, can you build a transparent Millennium?

Just wondering aloud if there will ever be another Steel Guitar show like the one with Reece, David Wright and Jay Dee? I really enjoyed Jim's last show and Im sure that everyone in attendance were thrilled as well?
