Is this Jules Ah See?
Swings very much.
Would be curious to know who his influences were. Horn players? Benny Goodman? Charlie Christian?
And what tuning he's in.

Find the Tapa Room Tapes if you get a chance, if you haven't already. I'm guessing this is earlier Jules, it sounds a bit less like his playing in the late 50s but he could do all kinds of styles and definitely had swing in spades. Pinpointing a tuning is tricky and because he isn't doing as much chordal work here, kind of difficult. He used other tunings but C13 B11 and E13 were the most common and given the few sparse chords he adds I'd guess this was E13.
My favorite player, lost too young in 1960. He's all over Hawaii Calls and Alfred Apaka albums of the era, but usually plays more restrained...the Tapa Room Tapes, he lets his hair down... _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

I keep reading about the Tapa Room Tapes, but seems the links I've been able to find are down. Anyone got a link? Or willing to post on file-sharing site?
I recently learned to play about half of this version of Hula Blues (not an exact copy - used some of my own ideas - but pretty close). It's very challenging, and very amazing playing! _________________ Bringing steel guitar to the bukid of Negros Oriental! |

Douglas, I will see if I can find the link to the Tapa Room Tapes. It's got to be on this site somewhere.
I did a little digging and it appears to be Jules on the Hula Blues track.
Erv, It is a compilation album, so I was not sure who was on that track.
Here's more detail of that album.
