I'm a new member i live close to Rochester
NY and can anyone tell me how close a steel
store is to me,If i want anything at all i have to order it on line,Thanks For Your

Since Billy Cooper's got the world's biggest steel store, I think a trip to Billy's will give you a better idea than just about anywhere you might go. Probably an 8-hour drive, so noodle on down the day before and get a motel room somewhere. Then, you'll have the whole next day to try his inventory!  |

You miht want to contabt PSGA president Bob Maickel in Floral Park (long island). He would know of a store in your area (if there is one.)
More to the point, he can answer questions and help steer you in the right direction. |

Hello Robert,
Sorry, no steel stores too close to you. The best two I have visited are Billy Cooper's in Orange, Virginia, and Bobby Seymour's near Nashville, Tennesee. You can go to the home page of the Forum, and click on "Links" at the top. Then click on "Vendors" and you will find links to these, and other stores.
Most of what you need, you can find at any good music store, picks, strings, cables...
Bars, amps, and steel guitars can be ordered on line, but it is nice to visit a store where you can see and hear, and try out diffferent models.
If you get over to Walton, NY, about 5 hours to your east, stop in and see me at Walton Music, Walton, NY. I always have a steel set up in my shop, ready to play!

You might look up Ed Bentley's Music in Buffalo, which may or may not still be alive. He used to sell MSA back in the 70s.
Also, a player named Dave Peerce (used to work for Duke Spinner in Rochester) may still be in the area. He would know of the resources.

FYI - on Dave Peirce... Dave is now living in Florida (just got an email from him around Christmas time)
Man, is Dave ever a picker!!! I remember him from many moons ago playing in the "Old Salt" band with Dick Leschorn. That was a great band.
There are more steel pickers in western NY than one would imagine.

Dave Behoffer (Sp?) in Canadiaqua is an Evans amp dealer and someone mentioned they bought a Mullen through him. Dave is also a steeler and may have other items.
He actually owns a Jewelery store and the music is a sideline. I don't remember what the name of the store is. |

Kurt, do (did) you remember (ever play) at Dino's Restaurant in Churchville, an old mid-70s haunt of mine when I was with the Innkeepers? I heard somewhere that the place was lost in a fire.

Yes, yes & yes... I do remember Dino's and played in there MANY times. Also, you and I may have sat in together as i had sat in with the Inn Keepers a few times with Dick Lee.
Also, I used to play in there with Don Newcomb as well and still play some gig's for the "old" owners of Dino's every once in a while still today. Skip and Gail Christ.

I took Skip Heerkens's place in early 1977 through September, when I moved out to AZ (I think he lives out here now, too.)
I remember Dick Lee well, one of the nicest guys I ever met. Jim Eck was lead man, and Rick Cicere (a paraplegic, believe it or not) was drummer.

I bought my 1st and 2nd steel from Ed Bentley.
When I left Buffalo 10 years ago, he was long out of business.

Dave's jewelry store in Canandaigua, NY is Crown Jewelers. Just take 332 to Main Street. He is located on the right side of the street next to the mini-park (now called The Commons). Bought my MSA from him. His band is The Crown Band. He knows a lot about steels.
Bought my present guitar new from Al Brisco. His store is just across the lake from Rochester. We made up and back in one(long) day. He has a great website for his store Steel Guitars of Canada. It helped me out a lot to physically try out several guitars until I found the one that fit just right. He is a great player, a great mechanic, and you won't find a nicer guy. If you bring anything you might trade in, tell customs you are just going to a jam session. I got stuck paying duty. Good luck. Don

I listened to Dave Pierce and the country rock group Old Salt at the Purple Pig in Bristol. First time I had ever heard country rock. Dave was gracious enough to spend an afternoon giving lessons to me, free of charge. He taught me how to rock the left foot on the A&B pedals. This forum is wonderful, there's steel players coming out of the woodwork.
