One of My 6 Younger Brothers Turns 81
One of my 6 younger brothers, Joe, had his 81st birthday yesterday. We have had many days
and years working and playing together. He actually learned to play lap steel 1 year before me.
In 1950, he and I played in a talent show at our local high school. We played Red River Valley
as our talent number. Although we didn't win the talent show, we had lots of fun, and received
compliments. It was a general talent show, and no one else played steel. Joe actually played lap
steel early on and dobro later. Here is a photo of us playing at the show, and the song we played.
We were both playing Silvertone steels from Sears. Joe is the one on the right.
RED RIVER VALLEY
This recording is the same as it was played at talent show,
but with harmonics added.
Happy Birthday Joe, and hope you have many more.

That's a lot of candles to blow out!
Nice combo with the harmonics. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Wondering what tuning you boys were using in 1950 on that tune?
Would I be right if I guessed A low base?
Kind regards

Bill, the "Jackson Seven" only applies to brothers. I also have 3 sisters younger than me.
I am outnumbered!

Very Nice, CE! What a wonderful memory. Thanks for sharing. |
Doug, thanks for the kind comment. Nostalgic memories of old times are really great as one gets older.
You may not remember, but I made my first eBay purchase many years ago from you. The purchase
was tuners for an Epiphone lap steel. I called you before the purchase and you were very kind to answer
questions.
Some time in the past, I made a DVD of many of your videos on YouTube so that I could watch them
while relaxing at night. I actually started watching again this past Thursday night. Great videos played
on several different kinds of steels. My wife and I enjoyed watching.

Michael, glad you enjoyed the song. The tuning is the one I used from 1949 until 1970.

George, thank you for the comment, and your faith in future steel players. I believe steel guitar
will be with us a long time. Keep making those beautiful steels.

Erv, thanks for the comment. You and I are about the same age, and I'm glad to still be here.
Joe was not the youngest of my 6 brothers, but One of my 6 younger brothers,.... You are
right, I would be really old, if he was the youngest. He is actually the oldest of my 6 brothers.
Hope you are doing well, my friend.

Thanks, Mike. Early memories mean a lot as we get older and reflect
on them. Thankfully, all of my brothers and sisters are still living, and
we often talk about our early lives when we get together.

Erv, glad you are doing well, and hope you are
still playing your steels.
A saying I heard recently is:
"Each day is the oldest we have ever been,
and the youngest we will ever be."
So, enjoy your music, and keep in touch.

David, it is a great old song. It was the first song I learned to play on
steel guitar. Here is a video of Marty Robbins, one of my favorites,
singing RED RIVER VALLEY. The words and melody kind of stay with you.

All I can say is you are blessed. I don't have to get a burn permit yet, but the family has
to be careful where they light the candles so they don't set off the fire/smoke detectors.

Red River Valley was the first song my steel guitar teacher, Jeff Kearns, had me learn...an arrangement by John Ely, as I recall. And now I have a better understanding of why he started me there.
I'm a relative newcomer (and barely 55), but as I've said a few times on this Forum, Mr. Jackson got me started: pure chance and luck led me to a youtube video of C.E.'s extensive lap steel collection and I became instantly obsessed. And it's been up-hill ever since.
So, again, thanks!!! And thanks for sharing the memories. They matter. _________________ Remington Steelmaster S8 w/ custom Steeltronics pickup.
