Was getting fed up with my lap steels guitars all over the place.
Re-worked this old book shelf to hold 6 to 8 lap steels.
A tight fit under the 49” flat screen Sony smart TV.
Now we can actually sit on the couch to watch TV films except when we bring the motorbikes into the living room at night.

The electronic device on the top shelf is the media player attached to a four terrabite hard drive to hold our downloaded movies, about 500 HD films..
The two lap steels in the front are unfinished works in progress waiting for the installation of the pickups and controls. The others are all working instruments.
Plus now we have more shelf space and can always use that.
Kind of cool.

Nice! Andy, is it hard to get them in and out? What is the short one on the right side? I remember those 2 you posted pictures of (WIP).....can't wait to see them finished.

thats really neat Andy. I think most of us are working out of small spaces so being able to make use of that is very important. I usually keep my lap steels on a regular guitar stand and find that right now just 2 or 3 in my music area take up too much space so I may have to give your idea a try.

Hi Bill,
Thats my cheapest lap steel and sounds like it too. Laughing
It's one of those Fender Re-Issues made in China.

Looks like an early 50's Fender 6 string with the magnet over the strings and a mirror finish fretboard (Bad Idea), but really it's got a cheap strat copy pickup inside there that has no middle or bottom end.
I just keep it in C6th so if I see some tab I want to try I don't need to re-tune my A6th Clinesmith lap steel. Very Happy

Hi Daniel,
Yes it was the same problem of space.
So all I did was remove the two middle shelves. Took one and cut a strip of it to use in front so the steels will not fall out... Then took what was left and drilled a row of 3/8" holes 2" apart for dowels to separate the steels and thats in the back behind them.
I'm going to get some of that soft rubber shelf bottom material to put on the bottom so they don't slip around.
Easy to take the steels in and out. Very Happy
Andy

It looks great, Andy, but I am not getting what’s holding them up. Looks like magic.

Hi Fred,
There are Acrylic dowels tapped into the board behind the lower necks.
They don't show in the two photos, but the steels lean against them.
