For all the times I've read about this, this was a first for me. I buy my strings as single string 12 packs from Juststrings.com. For years I've done this.
I did a full string change and busted my 3rd string .012 on the first B pedal move. Near the headstock but right not at the peg or the nut. Somewhere in between. Put on a new one. Busted it coming up to pitch. Next string, same exact thing. And the next. Obviously a string problem. It was a new 12-pack. I went to a different, unopened 12 pack and it tuned up, no problem (so far....) Thank goodness this was at home and not on the stand.
I'm going to contact Juststrings but one of these packs was ordered 6 months ago and the other several months before that. The 12 pack was only somewhere around $2.60 so money's not the issue. I doubt they can trace the defective batch from my order #. It just seems like I ought to let them know. Bad batches happen. This time it got me.
Nothing makes you feel as uneasy as a lack of confidence in your 3rd string.
I'm about to order some 12's from b0b. |

I'd be interested to see if they will do a refund because I get some of my strings there for other instruments.
I get my steel guitar strings from the forum to help support it.
They seem real nice when you have to talk to them. Not sure if that will make for a refund.
Sometimes I think some strings have been stretched a little too hard through the dies in places. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

I will be surprised if they do not offer me a credit. Which I feel funny seeking because of the small amount but it's still the right thing to do and I have always had big confidence in the company. My letter to them was good and had a reasonable tone. And really, the main reason I wrote them was to make them aware, even though the purchase was long enough ago as to be ancient history and useless info for the manufacturer. It would be interesting to hear back from them that yes, they'd received feedback about problems from 'batch #xxx'. |

I strings buy both from the Forum (to support Bob) and from Juststrings (to support a local, NH company).
FWIW: several years ago I got a batch of SIT BE E9 sets from Juststrings, and they all had a .030 string in the .034 sleeve (or was it the other way around? I forget. Doesn't matter). I alerted them and asked them to send me the missing strings. They punted to SIT, despite my objections that, as the vendor I had paid, they should make the situation right. They would not. Someone at SIT (I forget who) immediately rushed me the missing strings (plus several extras), for which I was very grateful. I have continued to deal with Juststrings, but that episode has always rankled me a bit. |

Not what I would have expected (based on nothing...just what I'd imagined) from Juststrings, Dan.
Still awaiting a repl. I'll report on their response. |

Jon, same thing happened to me but 4th string. Wrong string gauge in the package. I emailed them and juststrings sent me the correct one + 5 extras.
Good luck.

Thanks for posting, George. That's exactly what a good company does. Glad to read it. Hopefully, I can report something like this too and maybe we can restore Dan's broken relationship with them |

As I said I would, here is the update:
I just received a response telling me that a replacement 12 pack was on its way.
Doing it right.
Meanwhile I also have some D'Addario's coming from b0b. |

Hi Jon,
Good to know they did right by you.
I kind of thought they would because they were always good with my orders.
I think they are a very small company and those are often best to deal with.

Yep. The guy also suggested Ernie Ball & D'Addario reinforced PSG strings but I told him that I've been using the (nameless) 12-pack singles for years now with zero problems.
I'll repeat, I was sort of stuck not knowing what to do because there's no way I'm out of joint about two and a half bucks. But on the other you're supposed to do something when you're stuck with a dozen strings (well, seven left) that aren't good for anything. |

it happens, years back I bought a 12 pack of 11's , the "PREMIER" string brand . The first 3 or 4 broke while tuning the B pedal , just as the OP is talking about. Really puzzling. My conclusion was ( is) that they were not 11's in the package. My eyes are not good enough to tell if they were 11's or 10's, and I don't carry a micrometer !
The bad news,( or maybe good news) I went back to Cobra's as spares and never purchased that brand ever again ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

I meant to mention that these measure out as .012's. No error there.
What I can't picture is how they would all have a weak spot right there between the nut and the post. The wire is obviously manufactured in spool-lengths and then cut down. Maybe the pincher/grabber when it's cut to size or when it's held for the ball-end assembly was misadjusted and was crimping them. I've never seen the process so I'm just making that up. |
