I have a question for you Bud experts.
I have a later “pot-metal†Sho-Bud LDG with a triple-raise, double-lower changer, an earlier LDG with a double raise, double lower changer and an older Pro-II Custom with double-raise, single-lower changers (not a rack & barrel). All 3 are set up well and I can tell the Pro-II has never been messed with or changed since it left the factory.
All of the two LDG’s pedals and knees have quite a bit more travel for their pulls and lowers. Certainly a lot more than than the older Pro-II. Why is that? Is it all about bellcrank and changer-hole choices with knee lever & pedal stops playing a part, too?
Actually, I kind of like the longer travel for some of the changes.
Last, on a different point, I’ve been gigging with push-pulls forever but, for the heck of it, have used these Buds for the last two months. And, more than I can remember, I’ve gotten a good number of positive comments about my tone from band and audience members. Hmm..maybe there’s a message there. |

its all about where you place the pulls on the BellCranks. Thats why there are 5 holes on the later Sho Buds , you may not be able to get things exact, but you should be able to get things pretty darn close. And yes, STOP placements may play a role. String gauges also come into play, it all matters.
Regarding the PP vs Sho Bud tone, no there is no hidden message. It is what it is.

You didn't say whether the newer 3/2 LDG has the later 5-hole bell cranks, but the 2/2 LDG probably has the older 2-hole style. As Tony noted the available leverage options are greater with the 5-hole, but the different scissor geometry on the later style fingers is probably the bigger difference you're feeling. The scissor geometry on both the later 2/2 and 3/2 fingers is the same, but it is completely different on the older 2/1 fingers. The leverage on those earlier 3-piece scissors is quite different, it's much simpler and a more direct pull.
