| I was reading about how much Jim Reeves hated steel guitarists and was wondering if there were other artists who hated steel guitarists or just the sound of steel guitar. I know in his book Charley Pride said some unflattering things about steel guitarists in general, that they were flakes!. Thanks! |

Sometimes artist wont have one in their band not necessarily because they dont like steel guitar but they dont want to pay for one in their band if they can get by without it. Every country act needs a steel guitar player. The more the merrier.

| I once was told that Don Williams had no love for steel guitar, but without the sounds of Lloyd Green on all his albums I don't think they would have sold as good as they did. I did see him once in the UK without steel and was never going to one of his gigs again, the magic of the steel sound helped make that performer IMHO . |

Growing up in and just outside of Nashville, the sounds I listened for then and still do today are the sounds of steel guitar, and separately banjo. Local TV at the time (60's) was great. Flatt and Scruggs. Wilburn Brothers. Porter Wagoner, Bobby Lord Show, Noon Show. etc..... All of the Nashville greats were playing, and these sounds are still what I consider to be real country music. Got to have steel, or banjo depending on the style of real country music. Guess that's why I still play steel and banjo today.

On a separate thought--back in the 80's or so, Bill Anderson had his "Po Folks" restaurants open, in Tennessee anyway. Their food wasn't too bad, but the music on the MUZAK they played was pure 60's, pre "Nashville Sound" country. Lots of steel guitar stuff. That, more than the food, kept me heading there as a regular lunch spot. Chicken and biscuits and classic steel sounds. Pretty good combination.

| Back in his heyday. Kenny Rogers had no use for steel guitar played by anyone. He was over heard saying Pete Drake type playing made his skin crawl. As for today. I have no idea. |

| Back in his "Heyday" (and to this day for that matter), Kenny Rogers' singing and records make MY skin crawl... A 3 min. waste of Country Radio air time when a good song could have been playing IMHO. Of course, I was spoiled playing for Gene Watson who LOVED pedal steel guitar. Many other great artists liked the steel guitar also and like Steve Hinson said, it showed as they had one in their band. |

| Never had any use for Alabama, Kenny Rogers or K. T. Oslin. Probably get struck by lighting over that. Never had any use for Country Music without Steel Guitar. I know that Blue Grass, in general, does not use Steel Guitar. That is ok. They have a sound of their own. Fiddles, Banjos, Acoustic Guitars and a stand up Bass. |

Chris Cagle had a few hits and he was asked why he didn't have steel in the band and he supposedly said we don't need no stinkin steel.

I have a recollection of reading about the 'celebrations' at the news of Jim Reeves' sudden death. Bobby Garrett and the Big E were, I think, participants. Somewhere on a night-ride in a band-bus, perhaps? It's a hazy memory.
Somehow I think their antipathy was due to Reeves' unpleasant demeanour rather than his aversion to steel guitars.
Cam anyone else recall that story?

I guess I've been lucky. Most all the singers I've worked for loved steel guitar.  I think that's because they were true classic country fans, and because I also try to be versatile, and play a lot of stuff people usually don't hear from a steel player. Another reason might be that I know thousands and thousands of songs.
(A very common comment I've heard from singers is that most steel players don't play enough to earn their money - they tend to get aggravated when a steeler just sits with his hands folded for most of the song.)
I guess it could also be said that some singers just don't like the way some players play...or act. Personality has a lot to do with it, sometimes. |
