Topic: Old tweed cabinet and 15 inch Jensen |

I have this cabinet which looks to me to have once housed an amp chassis in the top as four Fender spaced holes are drilled through the top and there is copper mesh stapled to the inside top. Any idea what this may have been?
I'm not intending to use the cabinet but intend to use the speaker in a cabinet I'll build in the spring after the black walnut milled lumber from my property has dried. Any experience with this speaker for steel?
The numbers stamped on the speaker are:
EM15-C7734
220520
input 8 Ohms

220 is Jensen's eia number. I don't know what model it is though. Not sure where an amps controls would have been...
Maybe a power amp with a separate preamp.

Should have some numbers after the EM. I have an
EM 1202 in my DR, great speaker.
The designation is usually "Concert" or "Vibranto" in the EM (electronic music) speakers. |

That doesn't look like any Fender I'm aware of. Maybe a Premier or other smaller brand.
Have you tried running the speaker with steel yet?

| The speaker is a EM1500.C7734. I have tried it powered by my 1965 Fender Showman head. Sounds pretty good to me. I plan to make a cabinet for it with a three piece back so I can experiment with open or closed back. The collie howls at my dobro playing. |

That's a very (late 50's early 60's) vintage made in U.S.A. Jensen bass guitar speaker with a bell cover.
70 watts 8 ohms.
"EM" must mean Electronic Musical Instrument.
It should be an AlNiCo speaker because of the bell.
AlNiCo speakers are getting harder to make because the "Co" cobalt is getting harder to acquire because most of it comes from the Congo and they've changed mining policies. Production of superalloys/permanent magnets has dwindled the supply of cobalt available. So it's in high demand as the uses are various; turbine blades, surgical corrosion proof implants. Joint replacements, hip, knee.
Also many like the sound of AlNiCo speakers and guitar pickups.
Although this speaker model has a free air resonance of 65hz, it should sound great for psg use.

Jensen..20th week of 1965... I have the identical speaker in a 1966 Ampeg Gemini VI (30 watts)... I'd be careful of running a powerful amp like your Showman with that speaker at loud volumes..

I also had one of those speakers in my 1965 Ampeg Gemini II. It sounded ok but I replaced it with an 8 ohm JBL D130 which was a big improvement.

Ditch the coil cord fast, and get some good lamp cord or dedicated speaker cable in there. Those speakers are nice enough, but its not a good pedal steel speaker. Not near enough power handling capability. I would get a JBL in there, or a Weber California maybe, and that thing should sound killer... bob
