Well thought I had my problem solved with the new Mullen Discovery single coil but it appears that I don't. I have some objectionable hum that I can dial out with the noise gate on my Kemper, but it comes back when I play any string and goes away as the sound fades. I have changed cables, outlets, tried it at venue I play at and it was worse there than at home. No dimmers in the house, unplugged all florescent lights. I tried the turn up the amp suggestion but that didn't help. Just made the hum louder. The hum does not go away when I touch the strings, changer, or legs. Down to two choices I am thinking swap out the single coil stock Mullen pickup, or try one of the hum debugger pedals. Thoughts???? I appreciate any help. _________________ Beard E-model, Martin D-28 CW, Mullen Discovery, Kemper Profiler,Bose L1 Compact |

Thanks for the advice and the links......I tried tonight to dial in just a small amount of noise gate on my Kemper and got the hum down to a reasonable amount without affecting the tone to much. I think the permanent fix might be replacing the single coil with another pickup.....read good reviews of the 705...one in a Discovery...so perhaps I bite the bullet and replace the stock pickup. _________________ Beard E-model, Martin D-28 CW, Mullen Discovery, Kemper Profiler,Bose L1 Compact |

The Hum Debugger can work miracles with that kind of situation with very minimal impact on tone. It's a completely different animal from the usual noise gates/hum cancellers that I've tried.

I had a Mullen Royal Precision SD12 that had the original single coil Mullen pickup. A couple of venues I played at, the hum was almost painful. I will say that I think Mullen's pickup is a great sounding pickup. But, in some places, a single coil just doesn't cut it. In these venues, the guitar player (Tele with single coils) and bass (also with single coils) had similar problems. I ended up installing a Bill Lawrence XR16, with a coil tap switch. I could switch from single coil to humbucker if hum was an issue. Sadly, I had to sell that Mullen to help with my move recently to Montana from California.
You might want to try a pickup with single coil/humbucker capabilities. I believe some 705's have split coil ability. I have seen both 2 wire and 3 or 4 wire versions.
This is another argument in favor of switchable pickup systems like the new MSA and older (and I think maybe the newer) Sierra guitars. Got hum? Put in the humbucker. No hum? A single coil it is. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Well bit the bullet and got a 705 from Mike at Mullens and installed it yesterday.....sounds great in my Discovery and whisper quiet even when I put volume at max. No hum. Installation took about 45 minutes, but was super easy. _________________ Beard E-model, Martin D-28 CW, Mullen Discovery, Kemper Profiler,Bose L1 Compact |

I saw where Robert Randolph has a HB and a single coil back to back in his Fessendens, I was wondering if that hurts sustain/tone/anything else to have that big a cutout in the neck for 2 pickups
