I came across this Magnatone Steel/Amp combo today in a music store in Nashville. Hadn't seen one of these before.

I’ve seen that lap steel guitar for sale online, but never the combo with the amp like that.
It is super-cool! _________________ Current Tunings:

I don't. The main guy who runs the place was out and the guy I spoke with didn't know. It was not for sale. They said a good customer had given it to them as a gift.
It was at Rumble Seat Music which is a relatively small new cool shop in Nashville, just down the road from Gruhn's Guitars and Carter's Vintage Guitars.

BTW, I have to drive past all three of these shops everyday on my way to/from work. Talk about temptation! |

The steels come up quite often but not with the amp/stand combo.. very cool.. I have a couple of the steels, but there is no provision on them for attaching to the stand.. Very comfortable to play actually.. tuning them is a bit of a bear, but they hold tuning very nicely. _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

This is a Magnatone Melodier (not Melodia):

I've only seen one prior photo of this guitar with the amp acting as the base of the guitar stand. A pretty cool idea from yesteryear for a small bar band. The guitar, as you know, is sheet metal covered with MOTS. Some are brass, and some are painted. I think the back is flocked plywood. Without checking more, I think they're early 1950's. The tuner setup makes it ultra-compact, like a headless guitar. But that's not very convenient if you're right handed; you want to tune with your left hand, not your right. This is one of the vintage guitars that inspired me to build my own compact 24" scale guitar. |
