Due to some pretty bad arthritis in my hands that can’t be treated with anti inflammatory drugs ( because of other conditions) my rheumatologist is suggesting a knuckle replacement . Has anyone even heard of this happening to anyone ? BTW it is the first knuckle from the thumb right hand . |

Not sure about that. My doctor has explained the limitations of knee replacement so I have waited and taken the injections. My hands are starting the same problem. I would seek out other patients and look for results. Do whatever research you can. Good luck. |

I don't know much about it, but I think they are quite problematic and are more short lived than some of the other joint replacements. I would see several rheumatologist and see what they say and to get the surgery if that is the decision get the person who does more than anyone else, even if you have to travel, and not the surgeon who advertises the most but the guy that does a lot of them, there is no substitute for practice. Here is an article I found. BTW what do they say about fusion?
I assume you have RA? |

I’ve been having injections for the past 10 years and they don’t last long anymore . Fusion has not been discussed . What is RA ? |

I have multiple autoimmune issues, and am currently taking a couple of immunosuppressants. Among other things that these have helped is my arthritic joints. I had gotten to the point where my left hand was pretty much unusable, but after a few months on these drugs, I have probably 90% of my left hand function again, and hardly any pain at all. These are not traditional anti-inflammatory drugs, but if your arthritis is autoimmune in nature, like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, etc, immunosuppressants can reduce inflammation.
It was my neurologist who prescribed these--my rheumatologist didn't.
Good luck!

My Mother had 3 knuckles replaced 2 on one hand and 1 on the other. She was a piano player, not a steel player. I will say that it helped her overall, however, there was constant pain and her playing did not return to the normal, which was totally frustrating for her.
For a steel player, the movement is faster and more precise I think. after seeing her outcome, I would be hesitant for sure unless I were ready to quit. She had to quit playing all together and could not do little things with her fingers.
Good luck! _________________ Just north of the Weird place, south of Georgetown |

I had to give up my first love, Lead guitar, due to AO. Thank God the steel guitar has furnished me with a musical outlet. So I don't have to feel I wasted my life. I looked into joint replacement. It didn't seem too promising. Ron _________________ Emmons SKH Le Grande, '73 Fender P/J bass, Tick tack bass, Regal high strung, USA Nashville 112. |
