Played a LOUD stage volume gig last night outside. My new "Milkman The Amp" did surprisingly well. I dimed the output and then had the volume up at about 10 o'clock. I used it conventionally as an amp running into a cabinet with a JBL K-130 4 ohm. While it is probably not as loud as the Fender '64 Vibroverb (with a JBL D-130f in the cab) I've been lucky enough to play through recently, it has more clean headroom. That's what really counts for me on pedal steel anyway.
I had concerns about the 100 watt class D power being limited and also about the tone. I played a different Class D amp before but it had a high digital crispiness (something hard to describe) that I didn't like. Once I heard that, I couldn't unhear it and sold the amp. WELL.....NOT SO with the Milkman. Sweet tubey clean sound of the preamp. None of that digital edge that I could detect.
The fact that it is so small and light, and that it can run direct without a cab as well if I have to, make it my new #1 amp to play live. That reverb is really good and convincingly springy too! _________________ '02 Carter S-12 uni

That milkman “the amp†is sneaking its way into my go to live rig also. I bought it for fly dates and in ear gigs but it is also just a great amp. I have a cab with a JBL D120 I use with it. The JBLs help because they are so efficient (and they sound pretty okay ). _________________ Bob |

I couldn't be happier...with the sound, the size, and the weight...I plug into a Jupiter 12" in a Deluxe-size cab or a Jupiter 10" in a Champ-size cab, or both...(Tim recommended the Jupiter and I'm loving them).
This is my fly, drive, and streetcar rig...along with the Clinesmith 'pan...

I’ll jump on this thread as well. I recently purchased a “like new†Milkman The Amp. While dialing it in, I noticed the Reverb seemed weak. I emailed Tim and he got back to me right away. Even though I was not the original purchaser, he offered to take a look and remedy any issues right away and at no charge. He made some tweaks and shipped it back to me the same day he received it. I really appreciate his support for both the steel guitar community as well as me as a 2nd hand customer.
I love how The Amp sounds with my S10 Dekley. And I’m a new tremolo convert.

Any issues owing to the lack of a mid control? Bob, how does it compare sonically to the Half and Half and all-tube Milkman amps? I see quite a few of these coming up used for sale on Reverb, which is giving me some pause. Anyone compare this to the Quilter 202 that is the basis for the Travis Toy signature amp?
Best,

This unit has become my #1 choice as well. Through a 12", 4-0hm Sica speaker cab to my ears it rivals my Milkman 'Half and Half' in the tone department. The reason that these appear for sale may be that the 100 watt output is insufficient in some situations. If that is the case however, personally would not want to be present on any stage with a group where that was a problem! |

No issues for me with the mid control. Tim has it dialed in just right as far as it goes for me. I generally use the mid control on amps to make up for things I don't like.
Comparing it to the half and half:
Pretty much the same tonal signature
Reverb in H&H is spring (sounds glorious) but the reverb in the amp sounds great.
Tremolo turns out to be quite useful on "the amp".
H&H is much louder which is necessary for some full band gigs. Especially if I need to cover the room with no PA.
The Amp is super small and versatile. Fits in a carry on or my pac seat and guarantees I will have a tone I'm into.
For gigging local and regional the H&H combo is the perfect throw and go choice. But I gotta say "the amp" is pretty awesome. I run a single JBL D120 but can also beef it up with a powered speaker or DI into the PA if needed.
Both the Milkman H&H and "the amp" sound much better to my ear than any other designated steel amp but....the all tube stuff of Tim's is on another level. I put NOS tubes in my Milkman Mini and well ...you know... waay to good sounding for my mere mortal skills. _________________ Bob |
