Does anyone know if lower return springs can be made stronger? I have read some where that it is possible
to heat them in a fairly hot oven for a period of time(?) I have spent a small fortune on lower return springs and none of them have been strong enough. I am not interested in buying anymore springs, only improving the ones I have. This is for a home made steel. Help anyone?? Thanks.

I know you can make stretched springs return to normal by heating them to 167° F if they’re Nitinol springs. But I don’t think you can make them stronger.

You say you do not want to buy any more springs.
You may have to buy one more set to get the springs that will do the job.
Go to a junk yard or auto store and check the springs used in auto drum brake systems, The brake shoe return springs, Are very strong springs for their diameter and length.
Cutting a coil at a time till you get the spring cut short enough to do the job is the only way to adjust a return spring, To get proper return strength, Unless it is adjustable by a screw.
Good Luck on this problem.

Or, you can "stretch" the spring by changing the attachment point, or method of attachment.

when you stretch a spring, it will gain strength but will also reduce diameter. there is a tipping point where the spring cannot be used.
as i replied to you before, you can clip the hook off and put the hook back, there is a special pliers for that. you probably could get 4 rounds off before issues start to arise.
brake springs will require hydraulics to make it easy or a long lever, LOL.
if i were in this boat, i would use double springs, aka, booster springs. there could be several ways to do this. but for the space, i would use spring inside a spring.
pictures say a thousand words and will open up minds as i brought out before.
