I just came into possession of this wonderful old set:
The steel had replacement tuners, but fortunately I had a set of originals on another Audiovox that was laying around in a "project" state. Otherwise, it looks to be all original including the cable. The amp has a recent power cord and sounds like it needs a cap job, but it still works.
I understand that this was Audiovox's first steel model. Everything looks to me like it's a real early example, with a kind of "duco" effect on the top plate instead of nickel, and black crinkle paint on the speaker grill. However, there's so little information about these instruments that I'm largely going on conjecture. Would anyone disagree with a date of 1933-4?
Also, how did they get that effect on the top plate? I called it "duco" but there's no paint, just what looks like crystallization of clear laquer.

A+ on the nice acquisition. Way cool pair.
How do you like the sound of it? Maybe you could post an audio file of this Audiovox.
When I was a kid they once sold a paint for the back glass of an aquarium which crystallized into much the same pattern from what I can tell in your photo.
My guess is they used a very similar product there as well.
At any rate, wonderful acquisition. Quite the rarity I would imagine.

I was thinking the same thing--I used that aquarium paint when I was a kid too, and it looked exactly the same as Noah's guitar. A very cool guitar indeed!

Duco paint as sold by Dupont and favoured by National on the Duolians, too toxic for todays eco friendly society.
