There is a roll that I'm wanting to nail down. It's the typical 'Mooney' thing that can be gotten with a pedal in open or pedals down position but there's the timbre of open strings that is sometimes what I want to hear. The only way I can finger it without hopping strings with the same finger creates this very awkward move. I'm trying to decide if I am wasting energy trying to get this clean and up to tempo. The thumb cross-over to string 1 is pretty whack but it's do-able. Anybody do it?

| No problem with that, Larry--as I said, it's there at 10 and I use it all the time and it's there at 3 with a well timed C pedal stomp but I want this additional option with the timbre of the open strings. I can play that figure as I wrote (palm blocked) but with a lifetime of other things to spend energy and time on, it seems just nasty enough to wonder if it is worth it. |

If I were going to do it in NP position I would still slur the 3 to 2 or 2 to 3 by moving the bar. You'd be surprised how fast you can do it.

Jon, I have never played this particular lick. I did play around with it though, and IMO, this is the best way to finger it. I had little trouble getting it up to speed (120 bpm on a metronome). Depending on your crossover technique and whether you favor the first finger or second finger will determine how long it takes, but I don't think it'll be too hard. .. Jeff

Outstanding, Jeff. I got locked into a two finger mindset. I work other rolls with thumb and both fingers but your combo is new muscle-memory territory. Tripping me up pretty good but an excellent solution once I get more comfortable with it.
Good going.
And you know what--I think there are benefits to be had from getting comfortable with my original fingering too. I'm going to try to get both of these under the belt. |

Immediatly when I saw how you were fingering this, Jon; I thought to myself: "I believe I would do it like this" and then I scrolled down to find that Jeff(who always amazes me with any and everything he does and says)just tabbed it the way I would do it.

This is the same lick that Buddy played on "Liberty," from the "Western Strings" album by the Cherokees. I sent him an email one time and asked how he played that lick.

Herb--if you mean the figure exactly as I wrote, played with the fingers exactly the opposite of how I proposed it...man that's brutal. Though not more than my fingering.
