| Here is something that might help someone , if you have band in a box or some other music source that you can enter chords into try putting some simple chords into a progression and playing those on your steel nice and easy and increase the tempo as you get better this will help you keep in tune and also help your timing , also as you get your timing try playing an arpeggio over each chord as you play or another way on each chord play that specific scale then move to the next chord in your progression and repeat throughout the entire sequence. Try different chords using different knees and pedals so you ll get used to using them , sliding into another chord from one to another is good practice also, and of course you ll want to practice your vibrato the whole time . anyways just some beginning tips that might help someone. |

I do something similar, but I use just bass and drums, no chords. The problem with computers is that they use strict equal temperament while most steel players don't, so trying to get chords completely in tune is not possible. But what you're doing will get you close even if it's a bit jangly.

There are a few websites that will play various chord progressions or backing tracks to songs, check out “Free Guitar Backing Tracks” and “Free Bluegrass Backing Tracks”. The bluegrass site has a fair amount of non-bluegrass tracks.

Decidedly less tech, but I just recorded a voice memo on my phone of myself playing 4 beats of every chord in the key of G (even the diminished 7th) at a relatively slow tempo on an acoustic guitar.
Then, when I want to practice my intonation, I plug it into the PA in the garage and play along, sliding between inversions. |
