I’m going to give the D’addario NYXL strings a go. My guitar is set up with a .036†string 10 and I’ve never tried anything thicker. Can anyone who’s done the same confirm whether or not any adjustments will need to be made to make the .038†in this set work? I can’t imagine .002†making much of a difference. |

I like heavier strings and have been mostlty using .038 for most of my 49 years playing so far. But I don't have any problems using a .036 either. Just like the .038 better. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Thanks, Richard. I’m sure that tonally it won’t make a huge difference. I’m just wondering if the position of the pull rod for pedal A would need to be moved to accommodate a slightly thicker string. |

Hi Mathew. Every guitar I’ve changed over to those NYXL string has improved. I think you’ll be pleased.
You will have to re intonate whenever you changed string model or gauge.
My only complaint is the cost. I mostly play 12 string and it’s a lump of change for a set of strings. They do seem to last longer, so the expense is offset slightly.

My scale is 24 1/8" and my B string has been .042 for many years.
It gives me the sound and tension I want. |

Mathew..The gauge difference may require a slight adjustment of the nylon tuning nut. If you are using a chromatic tuner, it should read '436' when 'A' pedal is in tune. |

Hey, John. That's what I keep hearing. I've been really happy with Jagwire strings for the last couple of years but I figure I'll see if the NYXL live up to the hype. The cost is a bit of a bummer. I use a wound 6th so that's an extra couple of bucks with each set. But if it means less frequent strings changes I can definitely live with that!
Charles, .042? I'm curious to hear what the rest of your set is.
Thanks, David. I figured the tuning will need to be tweaked for the raise/lower. I was trying to sort out whether or not the pull rod would need to be moved but it sounds like there isn't much of a difference. |

My first steels were ZBs back in the 1970s. Along with my first new steel (a ZB Student model) I acquired several sets of strings. I paid little attention to the gauges but will always remember that the 10th was an .040".
Years later when I bought a Sho-Bud Pro 111 the first thing I did was put new strings on it - YIKES! Everything was out-of-whack and I was clueless! I eventually found out that .040" was exceptionally heavy for a 10th - the Sho-Bud was adjusted to take an .036"....
I had no idea gauges differed and I found out the hard way.
These days I have an .038" on my Emmons. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

I tried NYXL strings once on the 12 string Mullen I had. By the time I had to buy the 2 extra bottom strings (no such a thing as a 12 string set) and shipping, it was just over $28.00 for a set. They were nice, but not worth the $10.00 more than the strings I have using for many years. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I use a 42 on my SD10 but my 10th. Is a G# I play a slightly different tuning where my 9th. string is a B and I raise it to a d note with my RKR all the notes fall in a cluster with this tuning. You don't have to skip over a string. I gott this tuning from Richard Comeaux. |
