Derby recommends and installs on new E9 PSG's: Hi to Lo, .012/13p, .015p, .011p, .014p, .018p, .022p, .026w, .030w, .034w, .038w The Brand is S.I.T.
For this first string~change on my new Derby, I'm experimenting with some lighter gauges. (so far, so good) Hi to Lo: .012p, .015p, .011p, .014p, .017p, .020p, .026w, .030w, .034w, .036w The brand I'm using here is John Pearse. I haven't decided on a perminent gauge at this time. So far, I like them both!

Billy,
I'm with Big John on the Jagwires. I've been buying the Weldon Myrick E9 set (from b0b's forum catalog--can't beat the service), which used to be called the "Jagwire Stainless Standard" set. I also have been using the Jagwire standard C6 set as well. I'm very happy with the Jags...great tone, and they very rarely break. This is what Charlie recommended to me for my D10.

Leon put a new set of Jagwires on my pro 1 wnen he finished it, 3 monts ago and they still sing good as long as I wipe them off and never broke one yet. I use to change SITs every 3 weeks. I use Herbey Wallace Stainless love them.

I use George L's stainless and between that and the tru-tones...you couldn't ask for a better sound!

I use ghs strings on mine since they make most strings for most manufacturers. I use the tremelo reinforced plain strings 13 15 11 14 17 a high break plain 20 and then the wound ones 7-10. I am using a 710 on my E9th and was thinking about a 905 on the C6th. Haven't changed it from the George L yet. Sure made a difference on the E9th. Of course it helps to to have an endorsement because the tremelo strings are about twice as much cost wise.

| I know it's "to each his own" but i used SITs on the derby i had for a while, then went back to some of the others i've used over the years and for me personaly the jagwire strings, (stainless) 12/13 15 11 14 17 20 26 30 34 36 are here to stay untill something else i feel is better comes a long. and I use them on my new guitar as well. Perhaps, if I would have said JagWire everyone would realize that I said John Pearse Strings. I don't know anything about JagWire Strings and have never tried them. It seems everyone here read my Post incorrectly! I have used only John Pearse strings for quite a few years and so far as I know, I haven't even tried S.I.T.'s yet since I don't know what was on the SD-10 that I had before this new D–10 Derby. And I've had only John Pearse strings on this new guitar! I plan to try the S.I.T.'s, to be fair to myself or anyone else; on my next string change. Like everyone says: “To each his own”!

Charlie is still installing and recommending nickel SIT's in the "Emmons" gauges as per Big John's post. He has used them for several years. As has been stated before, to each his own, but I like to defer to the builder on things like strings and pick-up recommendations as much as possible. Noone knows better what works best on his instrument. Whatever works for you though.
As an aside, I just came from there and saw some gorgeous tiger maple bodies Charlie has in production. Man oh Man! His mica guitars ain't too shabby either, of course.
He played me a sample of Ron Elliott's "Most Requested" CD.
Ron, love your selection of tunes and your playing is beautiful. The production is top notch too! |
