I have been watching Alvino Rey and Kayton Roberts hammering on chords. I would like to know how I can incorporate that technique into my playing.

Practice. I'm not sure what you mean otherwise.

You have to start with a strum tuning like C6 or E13... the tuning has to make sense when strummed. Strictly, hammer-one are a singl-string thing... bar slams are what you are referring to, I believe. Muting is most important, otherwise it sound like crap.

I echo Brad and Stephen's comments and would add that incorporating your tone control is an essential part of doing bar slams. Below is a link to a down and dirty phone recording I did to demonstrate bar slams. You slam first with the tone control off and then again with it on. You can use the tone control on your steel if you have one. In this case I used a Fender Vol/tone pedal and the tuning is C13.

As far as how to incorporate it? Watch as many YouTube clips as you can find, study up and use your own musical intuition. Besides Kayton and Alvino, you might want to also search for Speedy West, Buddy Merrill and Chris Scruggs.
