The archives of Prairie Home Companion are no longer available at Minnesota Public Radio's website, and are instead available at prairiehome.org
Of particular note is one recorded 5/1/2004 with Buddy Emmons, BR549, Alison Krause and Johnny Gimble. Here is the direct link to this show...

Buddy played a bunch of times on PHC. Bobby Black played it with Commander Cody and his LPA at least one time. Thinking maybe we should develop a list of all the show dates with links that prominent steel players are featured on PHC. Don't know that I have the time to do it right now, but if someone were industrious and had the time...

It was sometime around the turn of the century. They played a SRO show in Gary's edifice immediately following the broadcast. I brought my middle school-aged son. After Mr. K came out for the introduction and the house lights went down, a funny smell engulfed the Fitzgerald Theater. Imagine my surprise when my young'un passed me a joint.
Cody & band were absolutely tremendous. They only played a handful of shows on that reunion tour -- Ann Arbor, where they began, and the Bay Area, where they made it big, among them. They played St. Paul because Andy Stein, fiddler and sax man, was a member of the PHC house band at the time.
I'll never forget my son's comment after the show: "so that's what that thing you play is supposed to sound like." |

As a former Twin Cities resident, I was a regular listener to the live broadcast every Saturday afternoon on KSJN (Minnesota Public Radio) for decades. It was also rebroadcast the following afternoon. I was privileged to see the live show a handful of times over the years. The one with Johnny Gimble and Buddy Emmons was a standout. Emmylou, Chet Atkins, and Greg Brown were also memorable. There were so many wonderful local musicians who played regularly -- Leo Kottke, Butch Thompson, Pete Ostrushko, Pat Donahue, etc. In addition to the granola music the show was famous for, they attracted a number of top national and international artists of multiple genres over the years, undoubtedly due to the show's national exposure via public radio. I like newgrass mando players as much as the next guy, but it's just not the same anymore since they gave Gary the boot. |

Thanks John, a big fan of PHC, got to meet Garrison in NYC at Town Hall, so sad he got taken down in the Me Too movement.
He always had great music and guests, I miss it, I won't go any further than that.
