I've got an early 40's Richenbacher and there is a rattle in the horseshoe pickup.

When I play it without my hand resting on the pickup, there is a pronounced rattle. If I rest my hand on the pickup, the rattle is gone. If I put a rubber band around the pickup height adjustment screws the rattle is gone. See photos below.

I've checked every screw I can find on it and they are all tight.

Any ideas what could be causing this rattle?

Rattle if pickup is not touched while playing...

No rattle if hand is resting on pickup while playing...

No rattle with rubber band on pickup...

One of the tension springs for the pickup height adjustment is loose or compressed?
Don't laugh please, that's just a guess... Rolling Eyes

Maybe one of the screws on the bottom of the pickup ?? Not much on the pickup that could rattle..Did you have the pickup out ??

I've never removed it. Guess I should and see what's going on underneath it.

I'd guess it's the ghost of George Beauchamp.

My best guess would be either (the height adjustment springs are gone or weak) or the two screws that hold the bobbin to the pickup base are loose and / or one is gone.
Just my best guess.... pull that sucker out and have a look Shocked
