Hey all... I’ve owned this Super Pro conversion for a few years now and love it, but I’ve always wanted to know more about its history and who might have done the undercarriage rebuild. I’d never really looked at the undercarriage of MCI/EMCI guitars, but just stumbled into some photos of those and saw some striking similarities. Does anyone know if MCI or any particular person with MCI parts access was doing conversions ever?

Here’s a shot of my “Bud”...

And here’s a standard MCI..

Square cross shafts, different bell cranks... but anyone have any insight?

It looks like a Duane Marrs conversion, but hard to tell in the dinky pictures. Can you post a bigger picture?

EDIT: I just noticed the horse on the front apron. That particular guitar has been sold a few times here on the forum. It is a Marrs conversion.

Ian, that’s what I always said and how the guitar was listed when I purchased it, but Jeff Surratt told me in an email that he did not believe it to be Duane’s work. I could be mistaken, but...

Additionally, the Marrs brand guitars I’ve seen have all had round cross shafts, which is a little strange compared to this guitar and another reason I’m not so sure this was Duane’s work...

I’m just on my phone right now in a van with no access to the guitar, but when I can get to my computer and the axe, I can try to post more close up photos...

That guitar has been floating around here for a while, it was here: https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=285819&sid=0acbd2a43b9aa4c7c3401ecd297e011e, then for sale for next to nothing a month later here: https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=287906, that's where it was described as a Marrs conversion. Damir Besic had it for sale a short time later and a few dollars more. He also called it a Marrs conversion, but he may have just been repeating what the previous seller said. But that's only the last four years. It's a 35-40 year old guitar, and unique, someone must know more about it.

After seeing the underneath of this guitar in a close up pic on another thread, it is definitely NOT built from MCI parts -- the bell cranks and levers are quiet different.

Thanks all - been on the road and still haven’t been able to get better photos up, but I appreciate the responses.

I mostly just want to know more about the guitar for my own knowledge - it plays great, stays in great tune... I’m pretty surprised no previous owners wanted to hang onto it...

Paddy, yes, the cranks aren’t MCI at all... but the shafts and other parts are reminiscent, at least more so than any Marrs conversion I’ve seen (to Rich’s point)... I at one point was able to trace its journey back a couple owners but lost the trail before I really found anything out.

I mostly just want to know more about the guitar for my own knowledge - it plays great, stays in great tune, and is a real road dog... I’m pretty surprised no previous owners wanted to hang onto it - I won’t be letting it go anytime soon... although I probably should get someone to clean it up and tweak it a bit after all the miles I’ve put on it.

The mystery continues...

Paul, do you know anything more about the guitar's history? Did you get it from someone here on the forum? Just wondering if the previous owner(s) might have some insight. I tried to buy it from you but I was too slow!

Just finished a gig with it, so yes - have it! I’m not in any way worried whether it’s a Marrs or not, it’s a killer axe - it just seems interesting such a unique instrument doesn’t have a more traceable history, and my curiosity has the best of me...

Oh and Paul, I actually bought it from Damir in Nashville, but I think you had it shortly before that from looking at old forum posts. I can’t trace it past that old eBay auction, so the mystery continues...
