I love hearing steel guitar anywhere. Maybe it's just me, but it just seems like listening to those older shows at the Grand Ole Opry there was just some thing even more exceptional or resonating how the steel cut through. I can't say what it is but something about that place the clarity or whatever just seems to ring different than other venue. Whoever the player may be, is it just me? Acoustics or something?

The sounds you hear from the Opry are great because they are recorded by the top producers and recording engineers
in the country. Who are working with the finest skilled musicians. |

I seem to remember that a custom-made Webb amp was supplied for the steel players. Sounds like a Webb in those videos.

Bob, that is the Webb unit that was designed and built for Tommy White.
Not sure if anyone else was allowed to plug in or not.
In the video with Weldon, I don't believe there was any such thing as a Webb amp, much less this special unit. _________________ AUTHORIZED George L's, Goodrich, Telonics and Peavey Dealer: I have 2 steels and several amps. John that looks and sounds like my friend Wayne Dahl on Steel with Martina.
Yes I played the Opry when there was a rack of Nashville 400's; but not long after the great Tommy White took over the Opry Steel playing chair; he had it switched over to racks of Webb amps to choose from on stage.
Here's me back in the day>

Just for the record: the Opry Box Weldon is playing through is a stack of LTD preamps sitting to the right of the steel. The monitor sat facing up at you and was on casters so you could move it around in case there were multiple steel players on the spot. I've seen up to six steels at a time and the poor soul on the end, without enough speaker cable, would have to play from memory. The Webb Opry Box came in with Tommy White. Guys like Weldon, Sonny, Hal and now Tommy - it's like their living room. For the working slug it can be a nail biter."Plug in and Pray" |

Thanks Bill.
Dang Robert I think you woke up my memory....you are so right...that was a Rack of Peavey LTD's, not the Nashville 400....which if I had to play through a peavey...I would choose the LTD over pretty much anything...ha...and I think the speaker boxes were BW speaker(the good one not the not so good one..ha.). Then yes Tommy switched it over to Webb...and I got to play through that too..and they sounded amazing.

I actually played steel once on the opry back in the 70's. I came out and was told to plug into a jack in the floor. I was just a young hippie kid and did what I was told. RP _________________ Emmons SKH Le Grande, '73 Fender P/J bass, Tick tack bass, Regal high strung, USA Nashville 112. |
