I prefer the feel of my 24 1/4 inch lap steel over the 23. They sound really different to me but I do prefer the tighter string feel so the 24 1/4 gets the most use. I do make more mistakes on the short scale. |

Easy solution for that is to use heavier string gauges on the short scale.
Example is I use a 56 for the low A and 15 on the high E of my short steel.
Todd set up my steel that way and I just changed the strings for the first time after two years of playing it almost every day. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

Andy, I may give that a try. I actually think my short scale captures a more authentic non pedal sound but I feel like my picks get caught in the strings which leads to some serious mistakes. |

Hi Daniel,
If mistakes were a sin I'd already be feeling the fire!...
Attached is a copy of Don Helms tunings and the gauges he used written by him.
One of the forum members posted it years ago.
The B13th could be A6th or C6th with the same strings and just a couple or more strings retuned a little.
Beat of luck,
Andy

Awesome, thanks for sharing that. Definitely gonna give it a try. I've actually been using the short scale for experimental stuff already so this should be interesting. |

I understand. exactly what you were saying.
I hate playing with loose strings.
Somehow having a strong resistance help my playing.
Gets me up to just a little below average on a good day! _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

My ear tells me that a long scale early Rick frypan has a better tone, or that "Rick" sound, than the short scale.
Not sure how a Clinesmith long scale frypan would compare to a 30s Rick.
My 7 string is a mid 30s short scale, and I don't quite get that sound like a long scale..it's there, but just not like the long one... |

I’d suggest chatting with Todd...I’m sure he can comment on that _________________ https://www.lostsailorspdx.com

The Ric that Jeff Au Hoy plays at the 2014 Fort Collins concert looks like a short scale to me. This sound would do it for me.
Looking forward to the Clinesmith short scale frypan I ordered … _________________ My YT channel: www.youtube.com/user/madsteffen |

I have 22 1/2" on my George Boards, 23" on my National Grande Console and 24 1/4" on my Remington. Of the three I prefer the 24 1/4" with more sustain. _________________ MSA Classic 12 string Universal, Remington Steelmaster D8, National D8 Console x 2, George Boards Lap Steel, National New Yorker. |
