I have a 12 string pickup with two rows of adjustable pole pieces. I bought it awhile back on the Forum and the seller said it was a BL-XLR-16. It has no brand identification on the pickup.
Did Bill Lawrence build an adjustable pole piece pickup? The XLR-16 I see on their web site does not have adjustable pole pieces. |

I don't think it was Bill Lawrence. If it's old, it was probably made by Danny Shields. Newer models with adjustable pole pieces are Tonealigner and Telonics. _________________ -š¯•“š¯•†š¯•“- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

b0b is correct. The Lawrence XR-16 is identical looking to the 710 with fixed pole pieces flush to the case.
The old Danny Shields model was (I think I'm remembering this right) taken over by Bob Hoffnar.
If the case is split between the two halves it would be the Tonealigner. If the case is a solid piece with no seam between the pole pieces then it would be a Telonics. |

Thanks for the info guys.
It has the split case. I think it is possibly a Jim Pittman Tonealinger. It's pre Bob Hoffnar...I bought it before Hoffnar took over. |

Aw man -- total brain fart. Pittman was who I was thinking of with the Hoffnar succession. |

Danny Shields first made the first Ć¢ā‚¬Å“crap trapĆ¢ā‚¬Ā¯ adjustable pole piece pickups for Pedalsteel .
Well after Danny stopped making them Jim Pitman revived the design with his Ć¢ā‚¬Å“tonealigner Ć¢ā‚¬Å“ pickups.
Jim put tonealigner up for sale and stopped making them. I bought the company from him and he showed me how he built them.
So I built them for a while.
Telonics copied the tonealigner design and started making them also.
I am currently not building pickups.
I have seen other adjustable pole piece pickups for Pedalsteel but they seem to be more one off sort of deals. _________________ Bob |

Not to drift too far off topic but how close are the Telonics pickups (I forget the model number) to the original Crap Traps? I imagine they're pretty close sound-wise... _________________ '81 Sho-bud LDG, 2 EMCI's |

I have a Telonics in my Sierra (by Ross Shafer) and it sounds wonderful. It's been a long time since I played with a Shields "Crap Trap", and the guitar (a Sierra Crown) was very different so it's hard to compare tones. The big feature though - being able to individually adjust the volume and tone of each string - is the same. I love that! My guitar is dialed in perfectly for my tuning and string gauges. _________________ -š¯•“š¯•†š¯•“- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
