Sometimes it's in the ears. After too much evaluative listening the ears get fatigued and nothing sounds right or good. Walk away for a few hours and then re-listen and you get a new take on sound.

Boy, is that true, but if you're in a studio with a deadline you just have to keep going and trust your judgement!

Mike my old friend, then why do players spend $3-5,000 on a steel, $2500 on an amp, $300 on a volume pedal, $300-$1500 on effects, $100-250 for a pickup?

To me all of these elements help to create tone, your musical expression and ideas come from your brain to your hands.

Having said that, different string attack angles can affect your sound.

How hard you pick the strings is an important factor.

Everything plays a part me thinks.

Yup!
Fat hands, fat sound.
Dirty hands, dirty sound.
Clean hands, clean sound.
Thin hands, thin sound.
Then adjust your amp to make your hands sound good.
