Great concert by Hag & the Strangers from 1978 at ACL. Man, what a tight band!
Anybody knows what guitar Norm was playing at the time? It is a strange looking D-12 with Norm playing great as usual. Very Happy

Kind Regards, Walter

Hi Walter,

Was it green? If so, I believe that would’ve been the Rustler that he’s owned for many years.

Yep, that’s the one! Pretty sure that was a hallmark of Rustler guitars, don’t think I ever saw one that wasn’t tricked out like that other than maybe a student model.

Unless he's got a wild hire, Norm still owns that green Rus~Ler

I believe it was a D11, and the last time I spoke with him - about 2 years ago - he said he still has it.

I bought this S-11 RusLer in 1976, brand new.
A friend of mine bought a green D-10 RusLer right after that. It was the same as Norms except for the pin striping.
I still have my RusLer and it plays as well as it did when I first bought it.

John, I believe that you have played that guitar many times at the PSGA shows over the years. Am I correct?

Hope you are well!

Hey Craig,
Yes, I played that steel many times for the PSGA shows. Actually, I played it comtinuously for 26 years. It never broke down and sounded great! A very reliable steel guitar.
And, thanks for asking, I'm doing fine.
Hope you're OK too.

It seems like evry time I saw Hag or a pic of the band the lead player is sitting down was there a reason for that, he's a fantastic lead player.

Fred Justice, first time I met you was in Dallas when you played your Rustler. Do you still have it? It was "tone to the bone".....rj

My guess would be that the band was patterned after the Texas Playboys. I don't remember Roy sitting before Eldon and Tiny joined the band.

I've got, thanks to the SGF, a Rus-Ler SD-10 painted just like Norm's (i.e.; Lowrider Candy Apple Green with badass white pinstriping).

Not only is it built like a tank, not only does it stay in tune under any and all circumstances, not only is it an awe-inspirational aesthetic marvel . . . but it also miraculously makes me play exactly like the redoubtable Mr. Hamlet: Concise; Precise; Perfectly In Pitch; Minimal but Ever-Musical. Always.

Ahem....
