Hi all, has anyone ever used or is currently using the SKB Rail Pack Case with foam? and is it satisfactory for airline use? I am currently looking to purchase a flight case and this SKB case is relatively less expensive than the usual full on "anvil" type case however, I would rather spend the money to protect my guitar than go for the less expensive case - unless the less expensive SKB case really works.

Yes, I've read several posts here from folks who use an SKB rail pack. They apparently fly well. Just click the "Search" link at the top right of the page and type in 'SKB Rail Pack' and read up on it.

A Super Pro might be a little too big for that particular case... Measure your guitar carefully, and take into account you're going to want an inch of foam on all sides. You might have to look at Pelican or some other brand to find one large enough for a big-bodied Sho-Bud.

I fly my steel in an SKB regularly, including internationally, with no problems at all. My Fessenden SD 10 4x7 with the lightweight legs clocks in at 48 pounds...

Thanks for the insight and info. you make a good point regarding the amount of foam within the case vs. the size of the guitar. With the steel being almost 11' wide and the case not quite 13 3/4" it could be a little light in the foam department (for my liking anyway).

I'll do a search as noted (SKB) and see what comes up.

I've made some inquiries to the heavier duty cases and I'll see where that takes me as well. Luckily I've got a little time to research before hittin' the switch.

In the end I decided to go with the optimum option vs. SKB's based on a worst case scenario approach. And even then - there are no guarantees but in this "case" its about as close as anyone can get! I went with the folks at Keal Case in Round Rock, TX. They were so excellent to deal with and delivered the cases ahead of time - and the cases are beautiful!! But more importantly built like tanks. When you close the lids on these - its solid and precise. Hats off to folks at Keal Case!!

(the case with wheels is the PSG case - the other is an electric guitar)

Luckily my new GFI S-10 Ultra only weighs in
at 26.5 lbs. I have yet to weigh them together.
(Step 2). I’ll pay a fee if need be. I’d rather have the extra
Durable case than show up at a gig that took
a day to get to and show up with a broken guitar.

Yep I regularly fly internationally using my SKB drum stand case for my Zums .....I also have a split Red Dirt case set but unfortunately the body case comes in about 3KG's over the limit in the RD ....which is a shame cos they are outstanding and well built cases! Next time I fly my guitar to the States though I might bite the bullet and pay the excess baggage fee just for the peace of mind. However having said that, I have never had any damage occur using the SKB case, and I have flown with that a lot.

Well.…tops scales at 56 lbs so it looks
Like I’m paying for my peace of mind.
In hindsight I probably could have requested
that the total be kept under 50 - but

My flight case is about the same. Try taking the leg bag out to get you down to 50 lbs. You can just walk it on the plane as a 'personal item' (which is permitted in addition to a carry-on). It's not much bigger than an umbrella so they don't hassle you.

TSA has never asked me what was up with the legs. But they've never NOT asked about the tone bar, so you might as well pull that out and put it in a coin tray and send it through the scanner so they can get a good look at it, ask you what it is, and save you both some time.

Eric, I have a case for my D10 Zum that looks like its built by the same company that built this one. It has the wheels that extend out like this one does. One of the wheels is falling apart and I was wondering if you knew where I can find a replacement wheel and also if you knew how hard it is to replace one of the wheels? I'm hoping I don't have to drill out the rivets that hold the wheel housing onto the case to replace the wheels. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this matter.

Hi - If it’s by Keal folks I would give them a

Otherwise I would probably do a search on
the oracle (google) for a company that sells
parts of you plan on DIY. I believe since
you are a steel player then you have the

HI - one other thing - after reading some posts on the forum about TSA folks picking up the guitar by the pull rods - I've made some handles on both ends with pull ties (with directions) to give the TSA folks something to grab if they have to take the guitar out.... I hope this works

Follow up.
After using the electric straps now a couple
times they work OK. However I think it’ Be
easier to use 2 nylon straps with buckles
around the guitar body at each end.

I'm working with Calton cases about building a flight case for a pedalsteel now. It will not be cheap but it will be a Calton case.

The problem that I find with the current SKB cases is that they're, at least for my uses, too small. The original SKB case that was used for the Sierra Wheel-Eze case was the same length at 36.75, but the interior width was 1.25 inches wider, and the height was 13 7/8 instead of 12 inches. Size matters for the pedal steel guitar.

So many helpful products for the pedal steel that you can no longer get (and the same goes for the Jeff Newman finger picksI.

Olli, I do not know when the dimensions changed. You can measure the case you have and compare it to the one you have. If it works, that's great. I ordered a new one, and it was too small, though my two cases are from the early 2000's.

The guys at Calton are working on building a proper fly case now. It is going to take some prototype work and a bit of field testing but it looks like it might actually happen.

The Carlton cases are certainly not light, but I suppose they might come in lighter than an aluminum aircraft style case.

They will not be inexpensive!
