I talked to Jerry Wallace today and he is going to wind me an ultra slick 3 position coil tap pickup... I am going to send him the SC unit off my old Willy, and he will wind it with 3 taps... 8-12 -17 K.. and no extra charge... it is SO reasonable, I am afraid to post it here... about 1/3 the price of some of his competitors. I payed 2 1/2 times as much for a steel pickup mod in 1978 from another pickup winder..
In any case, if you are looking for something REALLY special for your steel, consider a multi tap wound the way YOU want from our friend Jerry ... WHAT a deal.. and if it sounds like the dual tap he made for my Carter, I'm set for life... I'll let you know how it works out!!! bob |

That sounds awesome Bob. You need to post a sound sample of it so we can hear it. I'd like to brag about my TrueTone also. I replaced the GL-66 on my Carter with one of Jerry's TrueTones about a week ago and the sound is absolutely fabulous. no more high shrill soundin 3rd and 4th strings just beautiful clean soundin tone...pure heavan. Jerry's so cool and easy to work with too, in fact I'm gonna order another one for my C6 neck as soon as I can. |

I just ordered TT's for my Carter as well. Same problem trying to get away from the shrillness of the upper end. Jerry is a great guy to visit with and very accomodating to deal with. Looking forward to slappin' them on and trying them out. |

Andy and Kirk.... That's also what I have had for years (3rd and 4th string with a mind of their own)... those two strings have never submitted to the EQ... I've tried every home remedy on this forum and only had limited success. I hope Jerry's pickup brings these two devils to their knees and then I will be a very happy camper. It's so frustrating to cut back the highs and beef up the mids to hide the shrill sound they get. It just seems as though I have been muffling my sound to cover up this problem. I can get a wonderful open full sound from the 5th string down to the bottom and anything above that is a thin and shrill sound. Jerry is sending me the 19.5K for my 12 string universal..... anybody else have this on theirs and really love it..???

Just to add my comments on pickups. I replaced my George L 5 tone pickup on my MSA S10 Classic with a Wallace TrueTone and am extremely pleased with it. I now have much greater sustain. Before, the strings were muddy and ill defined. All strings now seem to be equal in tone. Great choice. It even has helped my playing tone. |

I have a pair of Truetones set up for my new MSA's and I can tell very little difference in sound between them and the BL XR16's or the George L's pickups that came with them. The TT's seem just a little brighter, but as far as hum, when I practice, the pickup is about 30" from my amp, and there is very little hum. They are great sounding pickups.

We all know Jerry's pickups are wonderful, I guess I was thinking more along the lines of his VERY good personalized service in making a one off oddball pickup, at SUCH a low price... 1/3 of what a new off the shelf Pickup from other builders would cost me!..bob

Hey you guys with coil taps, tell me about them - do you use them a lot? Do you get a much different sound than the middle switch position? I am just now having Jerry make me a pair of pickups for my D-11 Fessy & was debating a 10 or 12K tap, but not sure if it would really be very useful. I do love the character of my Console Grande and other lap steels & wondered if I could get some of that kind of sound. Or will it be a lot twangier along the lines of a Fender?? |
