Hello all! This is my very first post so please be patient if you would. I have a 52 or late 53 (pot codes are late 52) Fender Custom Triple Neck Steel. It has had a pedal added which raises strings 2 and 3 of the front neck via "plunger" that push the strings up inside the key pan. Currently this neck is E9 and the pedal yields the A + B pedal I to IV change. Stays in tune better than you'd think. Does anyone out there know who might have done this mod? I have pics but don't know how to post them yet. Perhaps Ricky Davis could help me out? (Hey Ricky! Remember that "fun" gig with Dale in Cole Camp, MO?) The mod looks as old as the guitar or close. Kind of "industrial" with a set screws underneath to adjust the "throw" of each plunger. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Been lurking for two years probably and just love the Forum. Thanks all! N.

And, perhaps this landed in the wrong place in the Forum. Off to a good start.... Is there a "No-Peddlers w/Pedals" section?? N. [This message was edited by Neil Harms on 26 January 2006 at 04:05 PM.] |

Hey Neil; yes I do remember that Gig from He!!....ha...and remember you too man...good to hear from ya.
I can tell you this....>that was most likely done Homemade by the guy that had it at that time or the next owner; as that was the cool/big thing to do during that era of the idea of pedals pulling strings when the Bigsby came out with it's first pedal steel.
If you find the original owner; you will most likely find who did it...>and finding the original owner is trying to find a needle in a heystack..eh...ha...???

Neil, ever so often it takes an old geezer to answer a question and this is probably one of those time. In the 50's I bought a Fender double neck Custom. Ben Jack had a Fender triple neck Stringmaster. We both sent these guitars to Springfield, Mo and had Doc Martin route out the bottoms of the guitars to accomodate a pivoting seesaw type arm that activated a plunger under the 2nd and 3rd strings. This was in the time period that Bud Isaacs had played that famous "Slowly" lick and had "The Waltz You Saved For Me" recorded. This new lick was driving all us then young steel players crazy. At that time Curly Chalker was on the Red Foley Ozark Jubilee in Springfield. There was a whole lot of pedal steel going on in Springfield in those years. I don't know how many of these guitars Doc put pedals on but at the time it sure was sweet.

This is just a stab in the dark, but; if it has (2)-legs close together under the tuning~well of neck #2 and a short Pedal~Bar between them, it could also be a Shot Jackson Conversion!

Thanks for the replies! A little more info. This one kind of sounds like both units described here so far. It has a fourth leg added. The original leg under the tuners was moved forward a bit. New leg installed behind it. The pedal mechanism was missing when I got the steel so I created one that gets the job done. It's mounted across the roughly 3 inch gap between the legs. I like the "see-saw" description from earlier and that's what it looks like. Has a pivot somewhat off of center of the arm, then a "T" underneath the plungers. A ball joint is on the end that goes down to the pedal. Nifty. Now if only I could figure out a way to split this to two pedals.... I'd be in hawg heaven! Thanks again folks! N.
p.s. Great hearing from you Ricky. I tried to send a note with pics to the email address I had for you but it came back undeliverable. Out for now. |

Here's pics of this Custom Neil is speaking of.
And it sounds like both Jerry and John have tagged what this is.
