Some may think that that adds an expense to the Guitar. But when you think about the value of a guitar from $3000-$5000, it’s a small price to pay.

Thank you Ron yes on my end it adds about $20 dollars for materials to buy foam an plywood. Plus the extra 15 pounds it adds to shipping cost probably $30 total cost for me.
But it’s the safest way I’ve found to avoid shipping damages.
The only complaints I’ve had is guys don’t like having to unscrew about 40 screws from the lid.

That'll do it. It's extra expense though. I can barely get buyers to pay the minimum shipping charges these days even when I pack it and carry it to the depot myself. I doubt seriously I could sell that pack job to a buyer with the added weight.

A 4x8 sheet of that insulation is $14 at the home center. About the same for a sheet of 1/2 plywood or maybe you use 3\8 or whatever the metric equivalent is these days.

I do use that insul board, but pack it in a cardboard case. The insulation is tough and probably enough protection for most guitars. Anyway, I don't have a table saw for sizing the plywood.

I'm glad for you that you can either mitigate your cost somehow or are able to pass it along to your buyer.

Of course you may have a commercial account with the shipper that would reduce the cost a bit.

I use 2" foam on my shipments. Sometimes I'll just build foam corners. $25 for a 4' x 8' sheet at Home Depot.

Greg I would say you have figured out a really good way to pack a pedal steel.
It is time consuming process and about as much fun as watching paint dry.
But when someone gives there hard earn money for a instrument they deserve a good
Shot at getting there steel in good condition.

Yes you are correct in the customer should get their guitar in good condition. And if you go to UPS Store to buy a cardboard box the size you need to ship a pedal steel guitar they charge you around $29.00 for the box with no padding just the cardboard box.
It is less expensive to build the plywood shipping crate.
Just cost a little time.
I have started doing the plywood shipping crates myself. No damage to guitars I have did with the plywood.
4 sheets of 3/8 and 4 sheets of 1/4 plywood 2 sheets of foam board will do 10 shipping crates that can be turned into a hard case very easy. $ 120.00 for plywood and Foam board $10.00 for screws cost per crate $13.00 plus a little time.
