Does anybody use CNC plasma torches in making pedal steel parts? It seems to me that the cost of getting one would be a good deal cheaper than, for example, a CNC milling machine.
This one, for example:

Please feel free to tell me I just don't know nothin', because it's real close to the truth.

Laser, plasma, or waterjet cutters may sometimes be cheaper than a milling station, but the finish results are nowhere near as good. You'd still have to do grinding or milling to smooth the surfaces. I've seen fairly good finish results with 3-D printers making plastic parts, but you'd probably also need added grinding/polishing operations when printing metal parts. |

I tried a run of laser cut parts—like Donny said, the quality was not even close to what you get off of a mill. I ended up having to manually re-mill all of them to make usable parts.
I use a 3D printer to prototype parts nowadays because it’s a cheap way to try things out. But for the real thing, I use a CNC milling machine or router.

Thank you! I knew somebody here would know from experience!
