I have an older Goodrich Matchbox 4a I bought off Louis Meyers when I first started. I've just always used it so that I can play through one amp for guitar and steel.

I'm finally buying my first nice steel and curious about alternatives. I like that the Matchbox gives me the ability to tweak volume and tone right on the instrument. I use the tone a lot to roll off the high end and mellow things out. I don't really know what's going on in the Matchbox electronically. Are there other options that basically do the same thing? Have the models really changed that much over the years other than cosmetics?

I've also really enjoyed using my Fuzz Face clone with my steel. Does anyone know what kind of fuzz unit is in the steel driver? Is it worth it? I like having the controls on the steel and I think I would like being able to tweak it on the steel leg instead of reaching over to my board, but I don't like how much those things cost.

So the questions:
1. What is the matchbox really doing?
2. Are there really significant changes between the versions or are the changes mostly cosmetic?
3. What alternatives are out there?
4. How about the fuzz side in the steel driver?

The 7A matchbox has an off/on switch so you don't need to pull the plug to turn off the battery but that's about it. I wouldn't be without one. Very Happy

I use a Sarno Earth Drive as my buffer/tone control/volume control/distortion. With the drive at zero it acts as a clean buffer with tone/vol. I have it clipped to the leg of my PSG so it's handy.
