Paul, you'll need to stop and get some John Hardy bbq in Rochester,MN on your way up and on your way home. Get the sauce on the potatoes.

The place was infested with great steel players 40 years ago. Not alot happening up there anymore -- as of 3-4 years ago, at least. Perhaps things have changed for the better since I relocated to the Centennial State. I certainly hope that's the case.

Not too much activity.
They tried to get a steel guitar club started a couple of years ago but discontinued because of lack of interest. Sad

I moved out of the Twin Cites and MN about 9 months ago..... I just forgot to turn the the lights off!

I believe that Steve Schmidt is still playing around the area now and then.

Paul... I second Jerry Erickson's point on John Hardy's BBQ in Rochester. I played Rochester on the club gig / road grind in the early-mid 70s. Went to John Hardy's often. Stopped at his new place again when travelling through a few years back and it's still great.

A question for you... did you ever have a booking agency back in the 70s..?? I remember bands who were playing the same towns throughout the plains states but different clubs. They were booking through the Paul Wade agency if I recall correctly. We were booked by Bill Goodwin in Nashville at that time. Just curious.

The Twin Cities used to be a great steel guitar area but like other places around this country, I guess it's faded.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that both Al Udeen and Cal Hand have retired. Two of my all-time heroes.

All my best to everyone up in the Twin Cities who are still hanging in there. To the best of my knowledge, Ernie's still working up in God's Country (the Brainerd lakes area).

SKOL!

I don't know if Joe Savage is still up there or not. He used to play on the Midwest Opry show north of twin cities.

Look for Joe playing with Lush Country as well. I was going to go see their group but am playing the MN Gospel Opry that night. I ran into Cal a couple weeks back at a Trade Fair and talked with him for quite awhile. He’s not actively playing anymore but does some dobro stuff along the way. Steve Schmidt is playing with Clear Blue classic country (subbed for him a couple weeks ago) and I believe they have a website/FB. John Ely took over for Joe at the Midwest Country Theater in Sandstone. Albert isn’t playing clubs any longer but might jump in here. I think Ernie is still playing quite a bit around Brainerd area.

Thanks Paul. I didn't really think you'd been a booking agent but had to ask. I appreciate your kind words as well.

We once played a club with Gene in Mundelein. I'm pretty sure that was in 1980. A real nice guy (I think his name was Jim) was playing a black D-10 p/p as was I. After the show, he and I posed for a photo together with our guitars. I still have that photo. No date or names on it but I believe that it was in 1980.

Thanks again Paul and I hope you're well.

Thanks Paul... Yes, Jim Shepherd is correct. Soon as I read your reply it came right back to me. He was a super nice guy and a good player. Is he still around..?? If so please give him my regards. I really enjoyed visiting with Jim and it was a fun gig.

It sure is a small world. Thanks again Paul.
