Yesterday I went to practice with some friends and was told that they had a nice amp that I could use so I wouldn't need to bring my amp.It turned out to be a Peavey Heritage amp and it was okay but I couldn't get rid of the piercing treble...any clues would be appreciated.

| Don't blame you for wanting to make it work (for future practice, not having to haul your own). But if you couldn't tame it at the control panel, the only thing left is to condition your steel signal. My first thought is the vari-z control on my Freeloader buffer. It does a great job of dialing out shrillness. You're surely not going to perform surgery on this amp so...that's all I can think of. |

Jon,I think that the best thing is to bring my Nashville 112 and not have to deal with the treble monster.

If I had the choice of having a practice room amp waiting for me or hauling my own, it would have to be pretty damned bad for me to haul my own. Must be a real paint peeler! I may want to borrow it for this paint stripping job I'm looking at. I'll be in touch.
Seriously though, Stu-- consider if maybe an eq in front of it might make it 'bearable enough' to not have to carry an amp. I have two stomp boxes, a graphic eq and, maybe even better, a parametric eq that maybe could dial out the ugly. Think about it and come by & pick them up and try them if you want. |

Jon,I have a magic tone box that a friend built...however the basic sound of this amp is annoying.

I have to agree with you about the shrillness(if there is such a word), but another solution would be to take a 15 band or better, a 31 band equalizer in the effects loop on the amplifier(pre amp out/power amp in)loop. Play it by ear, then manipulate the equalizer to you liking. Oh yeah, use the clean channel only.
The Scorpion speakers of the Heritage are voiced for mid range guitar so that is what you dial out on the equalizer. Good Luck. |

| Hey Stu, I have one of those monsters for six string Telecaster and I tried it with my steel and didn't care for the tone. However I did not try any go between effects to improve it. I will do that this week and see what I can get. Maybe an eq in the effects loop will make it happen. I know that works well for my Hot Rod Deluxe Fender. |

| Stu, finally got around to trying that Heritage for pedal steel. I was able to get a very decent tone on the normal channel after some tone tweaking. Mine has Scorpion speakers. I played my BMI S10 with a Goodrich passive volume pedal. It's not as good as a Nashville 1000 or Session 400 but I have no problem using it for a gig or practice. Heavy amp but usable for double duty with a Telecaster. |

I use a Peavey Heritage VTX with my steel. Also have a Vegas 400 which I do not use... its not in the same league as the Heritage imo.
I think its the best sounding amp Peavey ever made and works well with any instrument you can plug in.
First I wpuld check to see what soeakers are in that amp.
Two mods I did was drop OPA2604 opamps in it,.and put an original N112 speaker.. which has a good voice for steel but a great voice for singing Mesa preamp blues type leads. I have a quad of recent Mesa 6L6s installed and they sound better in this amp than any Mesa.
I normally use the Parametric Mid Channel for steel.
I have never found the amp to be overly bright. It dows have a Bright Pull on the Gain knobs.
I published a thread / procedure for dialing in an amp for steel that works well with this amp. You can probably find it using my name in a search function in Electronics. |
