I don't know where I got the idea that this was Dickey Overby on this cut - anybody know if I'm right?
More important is the tone on this steel. I like an old twangy, very treble heavy tone, but this has that, and a really well defined and present lower-mid and bottom end that's just killer. Maybe it's the sound of a 15" speaker? I don't know. Anyone got any wisdom on this tone?

That is Dickie Overby, he cut that with a Push Pull and a Fender Twin. I got that info., straight from the man himself when he lived in Tulsa for a short time after leaving Ronnie Milsap. |

There's a few guys who kill me every time (Hughey, Charleton, Rugg, etc.) and Dickie Overby is in that group. What a great player. Listen to the tune above that Joe K. posted.

That was wonderful - thanks Joe K.
Joe G, I'm right in line with you in the Hughey Charleton, Rugg fan club - Charleton and Hughey are my top favorites. |

You could get a tree limb and put strings on it and Dickey could make it sound great. He had great tone and a very unique style. A friend of mine saw him one night on RFD and he said that man plays the good licks. |

Did Dickey play on Hank Jr's Wiskey Bent? I have always liked that turn around. |

Oh wow! I didn't know that about the Hank Jr stuff. I always loved that stuff - had the LPs when they came out. In my own head I always thought that the pedal steel in the more traditional sounding stuff he did sounded like the perfect modern version of what had been on his dad's stuff |

Yes I believe Dicky ONLY cut on that one album with "Whiskey Bent" on it..... and that was the thing Hank wanted was that old timey sound.

Totally agree Keith, what a fantastic player. Many years ago when I first heard him play here on the forum I commented on how amazing he was, I received a pm from the the man himself, what a lovely humble guy he was I really treasured that message. Never got to hear him play live, but all the stuff on YouTube is regular viewing for me. _________________ MSA Millenium SD10, GK MB200, Sica 12inch cab, Joyo American Sound Pedal/ Jay Ganz Straight Ahead amp, Telonics 15inch in Peavey cab, Digitech RP150, Peterson tuner.Hilton volume pedal.Scott Dixon seat and guitar flight case. |

So in that same Swiss Alp show Amber does Together Again in E. Halfway thru the solo, Dickey lifts the bar clean off the board and finishes it playing the open strings an Octave down, sets the bar down and slides back up to where she is. So Cool like a musical exclamation point.
I "THINK" there is also half-pedaling.
He's clearly enjoying himself
