I have my 68 for 5 years now. Up until now I rarely had to tune the pedals. If I tuned the open strings all my pedals we're in tune.
Just the last month or so my 6th string won't stay. I tune it with the pedal down to pitch and have to tune the neutral (bottom hole) to pitch with Allen wrenches. I play a set usually an hour and I have to tune the neutral again. It goes flat quite a bit. I've been having to do this constantly lately. I thought it was a string so I changed it. Same thing. Any ideas???

It sounds like the lower return spring just needs tightening. Do you have a lower on 6? If the spring is the problem you'll be able to see it by just flipping the guitar over -- activate and release the lower, the the return spring should pull the lowering finger back firmly against the body opening when you release it. If it doesn't your open note will be flat and inconsistent, in which case just need to add some tension to the return spring.

Tightening those springs is kind of a PITA, use vise grips to hold the tension rod while you reset the collar.

Keep in mind too that if it needs much additional tension to return correctly and consistently it could be an indication of other problems, something binding or in need of lubrication.

Have you changed strings? Years ago I had an issue like that and I had changed strings. The 6th string was a plain and I put a wound on it. Don't even remember who told me but I went back with a plain and solved my problem.

There was a broken spring and a number of adjustments needed. Thanx to Rick Price, Emmons expert my 68 is back to perfect. Been playing it all evening and loving it!!

Maintenance now and then goes a long ways. When I acquired my 81 a couple of years ago, my good buddy as well as Emmons Tech , Doug Palmer, changed a bunch of tuning screws and went thru each spring and collar. He changed them as he felt necessary.

I don't think, other than adjusting pitch at the tuning key post , that I have made any Ped/KL tuning adjustments on this guitar in 2 years other than touch up when changing strings.

This is obviously all Buddy's fault ! Very Happy

I typically check/tune the highest Raise on any given string, and then the rest of the changes are usually in tune.

This guitar was completely refurbished by Bryan Adams senior Emmons tech at the factory before he passed. New light legs, lots of replacement parts etc. I had Jim Palenscar in San Diego set it up for my particular tuning and add a knee lever. It got out of sync before I learned how to tune it. Lol. Then Jim Loessberg gave me a lesson in tuning it and it has been perfect for a couple of years. I almost never had to touch anything but the open strings. Then as I said in the original post my 6th string started to give me a problem. But the minute Rick Price turned it over he saw the tiny spring that had broken. That was the culprit. Now it's perfect and loving it.Never had a push pull til this one and ever since I have it I'm definitely a fan.
