Topic: Joaquin Murphey harmonics |

Hi everyone,
I've been obsessing over Joaquin Murphey for the past couple of years and I am now trying to figure out the effects and techniques he used outside of his signature licks.
I cannot figure out what sort of harmonics is he using here at 1:56. https://youtu.be/ZNjmkATWLtM?t=115
What is it? I doubt it's behind the bar. I've been able to approximate it by using the fingerpicks to get the harmonic, but it seems off. Maybe it's an artificial harmonic?
Are there any other intricacies Joaquin did in his playing? I know some forum members have witnessed the man himself in action. Maybe they could "chime" in?
I appreciate any and all help.

| The first part at 1:56 he is indeed strumming behind the bar,they are really not harmonics.I saw a close up of him playing the single note harmonics that he does so well.After playing it slow motion it look to me like he picks them with his thumb pick and sounds the harmonic with the tip of his 3rd finger.He makes it look easy (it's not). Anyways that's how it looked to me. Maybe some others can chime in on this. |

I have to say, this is the first time I’ve heard this recording and Joaquin is pretty risky on it. I dig it!

| Thanks, Mike and Chris, for your replies! I will be experimenting with the behind-the-bar strumming now. I thought Joaquin was slanting the bar and playing a harmonic to get that strange sound. |

Chris, is this the "close-up" you are referring to?

It's interesting that he keeps his ring finger so close to his thumb when he sounds the harmonic. |
