Hello. I can buy a local beat up 30s Oahu for $100. Something seems off about the nut. If u look at the attached photos the first few frets strings seem much closer to the fret board than further on. I'd expect them all to be equally distant so you don't have buzzing on the first few frets no?

Any advice. I'm a PSG player.

Thanks,
Tal

Looks like it was set up with a Spanish-style nut instead of a Hawaiian-style one. No idea why, but it's easy to replace - and even easier to put a nut extender on there.

FWIW those usually sell for $100 in GOOD condition. They are very, very common, budget instruments - - I've bought and sold at least 10 of them over the years.

Unless it's a fancy one with graphics painted on the body (and in decent condition) it's overpriced at $100 IMO.

Jim,

Thanks for tip. Here's the reverb ad.

Oahu Oahu Square Neck Acoustic Guitar 1930s Sunburst https://reverb.com/item/18570015-oahu-oahu-square-neck-acoustic-guitar-1930s-sunburst?utm_source=android-app&utm_medium=share

It's the cheapest one that I could find on reverb and I asked him to go down to $100 because I read a post from 2005 that said that $80 was a good price.

I figured I'd try this out to see if my John Fahey phase wears off before I pluck a couple of grand on a weissenborn Rolling Eyes

All advice welcome.

Tal.

i have one from around that era. the one you are looking at does have some nasty cracks in it as well as others have mentioned that the nut has been changed. may have been refinished.

seems to me that it should be in better shape for $100 but that is my opinion. did he give you the serial number to confirm?

good luck.

play music!

You wouldn't get this one for $100.
This was an Oahu guitar used by the teachers, not a student model. I believe it's from 1935.

Any sense what sensible price for this guy is? Shall I pass on it altogether?

I'd offer him $50 and you might be able to split the difference at $75. Very Happy
