Im considering replacing my reconed jbl k-130 (4 ohm) with an original cone Altec 418b
(8 ohm) in my Webb 614-e amp. This is purely in pursuit of the best tone possible and really just an experiment. I'm pretty darn happy with my tone now, but if I had one complaint, it sounds a little one dimensional. I'm going through a fender stand alone reverb unit first then into the Webb. I've found this warms up the signal in a good way.
Anyone like the 418b in their Webb?

Thanks,
Greg

i can't comment on the webb specifically, but i have tried a lot of speakers, and the 418b continues to have a grip on me. i have used it in every amp i've had for pedal steel (?and for telecaster as well).

it sounds great in a twin or a deluxe reverb, and recently i put it in my milkman half and half, which came with a telonics neo. the altec helps bring the amp to life a bit, and gives a very sweet top end. the 418 also seems to have a certain touch for me. i have a number of ev sro's, and an a jbl d130, but for me the 418 is my sound.

my only concern with the 418 is using it all by itself in higher powered amps. it's rated at 100watts, but many pedal steel amps are capable of putting out quite a bit more power than that. i sure would not like to blow mine, as original cones are very difficult to come by.

let us know how you find it with the webb.

It does seem to have as fervent a following as the jbl d-130. Another thought would be to build a cabinet for the Altec and run it as an auxiliary speaker--keeping the k-130 in the Webb. Would this would be fine even though the ohms are different? The Webb is a paint melter with the volume just on 1. I am curious if the Altec could handle a decent amount of volume. I hear those cones are really thin...

I used a 418b in a Webb for awhile. It was a long time ago but I remember liking it. I do remember a sweeter top end.

An Altec in an amp grabs your attention.

It will depend on how you as the player likes what it does.

I have a 418b in my Twin Reverb. It's a perfect match and as Dave says the top end is very sweet sounding. I don't think it would be a good match for a high powered Webb though.
