Just wondering... Has anyone seen a black stained wood pedal steel (not formica)? I'm imagining something like burnt timber after a fire. Could be very attractive.

You can’t see from the picture, but the wood grain is clearly visible through the black

I have Jerry Fessenden's old mid 70's D-11 ZB Custom. We stripped the finish off and rebuilt it. Since there was very little wood grain staining it translucent charcoal-black seemed like a good idea. The finished result looked excellent - especially because of the very prominent jewel-like purfling along both side plates.

And yes, the tone is what I'd call exquisite.

My AVM Eagle was black stained plain maple, it looked really nice. I bought it new as a prototype 3+6 in 1980, but by the time I sold it in 2004 it had faded a bit, turning a bit brown. It was silky smooth and very precise; wish I'd kept it.

Oh, and this reminds me I need to paint the balcony floor... Embarassed

Yes, at least one Sho Bud D 10, and if I recall correctly, I once sat down at a solid black lacquer LDG or Pro I years ago..
the REALLY sad part is, that thick black paint was most likely sitting on top of highly figured birdseye maple possibly even flamed/tiger maple, thats rare as hens teeth today, but which sho bud seemed to have in endless quantities. These Buds were NOT, "trans black" either.. Just solid black lacquer.. I will never figure that one out, but hey a lot of people have paint on the expensive and gorgeously detailed woodwork in their homes.. I am NOT a fan of painted wood... bob

I have a black Super Pro. Bobbe Seymour referred to it as "see thru" black. The grain is very clear thru the black finish.

As they say, there's an exception to every rule. My first PSG was a MSA Red Baron. Despite the moniker, it was black. And it sounded like crap.

The Show-Pro above with the translucent black finish is gorgeous, showing off the figured maple. I’m in Bob Carlucci’s camp however regarding the opaque black.

In the case of Gibson back in the early 20th century, they used to produce a lot mandolins in a black opaque finish. This was generally done to cover up inferior wood, or flaws on cheaper instruments. Then again, the mirror like black finish on a Steinway grand is a sight to behold! I do like the look of natural wood grain though. Love them old Buds!

If my mind is on track, back in the early 60's, Bill West had a black Sho~Bud. Even had a pair of vice grips for a knee lever. I cannot remember if it was laminated, or stained.

b0b, This is a 1982 Pro ll I brought new. Have been told that it was listed by Sho-Bud as Charcoal Grey. This old picture of a picture does not show you the grain of the wood coming thru, but it did. On stage it looked Black. Great guitar but was stolen and I am still sad. J.R. Rose

This is just the raw sanded and stained wood....once the lacquer is on this baby the grain will pop even more. This is going to look spectacular! And of course is going to sound heavenly!
