I recently picked up a mid-70's LDG and have a question about the LKL setup. The LKL linkage, where the ball joint attaches to the cross shaft bracket, is fairly loose / has a bit of play. The ball joint nut is barely finger tight. Just wondering if that's how it's supposed to be, or if it should be tightened up fairly snug? Also, should there be a washer in there to reduce wear on the bracket?

Here are some pictures of the piece I'm talking about.

You want that snugged up - it doesn't need a washer

Thanks Brian.

Another question on this, what will happen if I shorten the length of the pull rod between the two ball joints by screwing the plastic part further onto the rod (basically shortening the distance between the two ball joints)?

This lever seems a bit too far to the left for me (specifically when I'm trying to us the A pedal and F lever together), and I'm thinking of ways to reduce the travel a bit or pull the lever itself closer to me without having to actually shift and re-mount the whole thing.

Check to see if there is a small allen head screw on the inside of the lever to adjust it's position. If not, then shortening the rod should work.
It works differently on the later guitars but your's has the stop on the cross shaft so it should be okay...

Thanks Brian, it does not have the screw inside of the lever to adjust the angle / position.

I've been accused of having a nut loose. Whoa!

I have the same guitar you have. That is right that the ball joint nut should be tight. If it tends to loosen, put a lock washer on before the nut. Now on the travel and spacing of the lever itself. If your rod is connected to the farthest hole in the 2 hole puller, (that means the farthest from the shaft), and the travel is still too long to your liking. make a piece of metal with 3 holes in it. Nut and bolt that piece to the existing 2 holes, so you have a hole another 1/2" sticking out. connect the rod to it so you have a shorter pull. I did that on mine so it was a faster pull. Now if you have thin thighs, like I do, I moved the whole lever closer to my thigh, so the spacing between the 2 knee levers is smaller. You don't have to move your thigh as much. If you have any questions, PM Me, or write here. Ronnie

To clarify, what Ronnie says will shorten the throw. Just shortening the rod will move the lever closer but the throw will remain the same distance/length.

Thanks guys. I think I'll try Brian's suggestion first to try to get the lever to sit a bit closer to my leg. There might be a bit too much space between the LKR and LKL. The LKR feel pretty much perfect, so I'm just trying to get it so i don't have to shift while engaging the LKL.

Ronnie, I'll get in touch if I have any other questions.

Erv, I think most of us are in the same boat... that's why we try to play these things.

Jamie,
You are correct!
You don't have to be crazy to play one of these, but it helps! Very Happy

Thanks for the advice guys. Tightening those ball joints up and reducing the length of the rod just slightly pulled the lever in just enough to make it a lot more comfortable for me.
