Ok done my research and pretty much sold on this one. I'm talking about the big one not the mini since you can't change the acceleration rate? Anyhow the question I have is from what I've read you can control the amount of dry signal and effect signal? Like to hear from anyone that uses one. Thanks

Not sure what you’re asking......You have a bypass switch that gives you rotary speaker or NO rotary speaker......If you’re speaking about the volume of rotary vs non rotary, then no volume adjustment ......You can adjust the balance between the horn and the drum however....Volume wise, volume in coming from the instrument to the Vent II , is what you get volume out....Jim

This is what I'm referring to. Apparently each of the five control knobs have 2 things they control. This is the last knob on the right that says
Mix/DIST HI
LEVEL

Oooop’s.......sorry bout that !!!......Mine is set at 12 o’clock and has worked fine in that position.....completely overlooked as not needed in my case....Jim

Btw...I have a 122rv and a 147 Leslie that go unused.....The Vent II is that good.....I’m a keyboard player by trade.....

What James said... Consider it a Leslie speaker. It can be Slow, Fast, Stopped, or Bypass, but there's no wet/dry control. I love mine, again like James said... had a friend who plays B3/122 tweak my controls and OMG! It's as good as it gets. I also use an Ashby Solutions half-moon velcro'd to the rear apron and it is too cool!

Although the Vent gets a "sound" it still is not like a real Leslie in that the sound bounces off of adjacent walls and objects, as the two rotors spin 360 degrees.

The rotors' centrifugal force (due to being mechanical and physical) is never exactly the same as they spin independently of each other, with belt slippage, upper rotor spring-loaded pulley, friction of the upper rotor mounted on a stainless steel washer lubricated with oil, assures that the animation of the rotors will always be different each time.

Unlike something digital like a Vent, which cannot have that many random parameters that gives the real leslie its classic character.

When coming from tremolo (fast) going into chorale (slow), it would depend on how long the rotors were in fast spin that will determine the effect of the rotors slowing down going into chorale (slow).

All that inertia of a wooden rotor with washers used as weights like weights on a spinning automobile tire and the 4 (four) motors spinning has an effect on how the ramps (rotors moving from fast to slow to fast again) sound.

I also have a 122rv and can make said cabinet a 147rv.

Case in point, supplying a rig to a major group whose sound tech had planned to take a line out of a B3 through a Vent into the FOH (that did not work) allowed the organ player to be heard through a real Leslie, which for as good a player he is and as how important a B3 is to that group's material, was as it should be.

The only reason the Vent was wanting to be used was for the sound man to have control over the volumes of the organ coming out of the FOH since playing a B3 is full of differing volume levels.

When the organ player emotes with the many drawbar settings and the levels of the expression pedal, the sound man wanting the organ to appear as a "finished track on a recording" within a live performance is bordering on unrealistic, as the Hammond organ/player goes. Each time the song is played, the organ player will use different drawbar pulls and leslie rotor animation, differing volume pedal levels.

Nature of the beast.

The other issue is if playing organ sounds through a Vent, one still needs to use a proper amp/speaker that will produce the higher frequencies where the typical Hammond frequency goes to 8khz. Much higher than a guitar's frequencies.

If going through a PA and monitors (wedges or IEM's) then the player/band benefits while the audience (many of whom really can't tell the difference) does not know what it's missing.

But what will always be missing is the sound of actual rotors moving air and bouncing around through a leslie cabinet where the louvers put the sound out of phase. Unless the sound is miced from the open rear of the cabinet, then the phase effect is less.

So many ways to mic a leslie.

Last major artist I worked with miced the lower rotor from the front of the cab through the louvers and the upper rotor from the back with the cover off.

I'm also a keyboard player by trade.

I also went through a clone/Leslie sim period after schlepping a B3/122 rig all over conus, playing a Korg CX3 through two (2) EV cabinets, a Yamaha power amp and mixer, keyboard stand, volume pedal. More gear to move, to set up vs. a single B3 and a single 122, a power cable and a 6 pin leslie cable, albeit not a 400 pound organ and a 140 pound Leslie. There was no Vent during those days.

Electrovoice SH15-2. 30"x15"x21" and 85 pounds.

Note that within these threads for the Vent, there are those willing to buy and haul a Leslie while others are wanting to take a vacation from one.

Reminds me of the reincarnation scene in Albert Brooks' Defending Your Life. Smile

The Studio 12 is 85 pounds and 27x20x20 inches high vs 41 inches for a 122.

I drew the line at 2.5 lbs.

To be sure... the Vent II is the best approximation.

Let me be more specific......I traveled playing a 1962 B3 w/2 Leslie’s, an electric piano, a mini moog, and a line mixer that would run to the board.....There is NOTHING that sounds
better than a B3 thru Leslie’s......BUT, there is nothing that I’ve found that is as convienient, and as good sounding as the Vent.....I’ve played through at least a dozen Leslie simulators, and this is the real deal .....and I no longer lug a B3 around either !!

As soon as I relocate, I will have another B3 for my home studio, but it will NEVER see the road.....

Ok well got a Neo on the way. I'm it using for steel. Playing through a G-37 Leslie now so I'll be able to get a good comparison. Will let you know in about a week or so.

James, I get it.

Whatever I posted was for posterity's and others' sake.

These days transportation costs and venues are not as accommodating as before.

The TREKii VIB-3, the best interface for a Vent to a B3.

This way you can play your B3/122rv and still drive your Vent and control the rotors for both from your rail-switch. Smile

Hi Mike,

I was wondering if I can ask you a favor......This switch looks exactly like a Tele 3 way switch......Could I ask you to open the cover and take a picture, so I can see how the switch is wired ? There should be 3 wires running from the switch to a ring, tip, sleeve jack that’s mounted on the box....I’m assuming that the middle position is a “stop” position ?.......Thanks so much for your time......Jim

Hey Jim,
This switch has a DIP switch inside for different configurations. Also, it is a 2-position switch: Slow & Fast only, no Stop... what I wanted for my purposes. I get where you're going, and it should be as simple as a Tele-type switch and a TRS cable. You might start at your FX (Ventilator) end and see what is needed there. There are a couple of different Vent "modes" for the remote control... see manual. Hope this helps.

In trolling the Internet, I see that Fender is entering the fray with a unit called the "Fender Pinweel".

Mike,
I’ve been reading a lot of threads on the modes.....A switch is basically a “latching” type setup.....So mode 4 fits the bill....What are the dip switches for ?......Thanks, Jim

The writing in the manual is round about !! If you look at mode 4 for example, mentions a momentary switch (unlatched ) but then goes on to say “press and hold” which now makes an unlatched switch a LATCHED situation !! Hard to follow as they double talk thru the explanation......They really packed a lot into this pedal, but didn’t IMHO do a very good job explaining it....

They include a setting for the Vibratone.
I would like to read some reviews on the pedal.

I just looked at there web sight Ashby solutions half moon. Looks like they make one that has 3 way that has stop position.

Kevin,
I saw the Ashby offerings...Thanks.....There are 3 wires that connect the switch to the Vent II.....How hard can it be to build a simple mousetrap?....Jim

Kevin and Jim,
Ashby does have the 3-way, don’t think he had any more 2-ways. I must have been thinking of something on Bruce’s website that talks about DIP switches, but I finally opened mine up like you suggested and here’s the deal: my 2-way is wired Sleeve = Gnd, Tip = Slow, Ring = Fast. Obviously considered latching. (Some push button switches used for some FX stomp boxes are momentary to trip logic circuitry)

It would seem pretty straight forward to build your own, but the Ashby’s are pretty reasonable, and mine came with a very pro TRS cable...

Mike,

Yeah, that’s the ticket !!!.......Thanks so much !!!

Reading another article a guy had ring and sleeve = fast and slow, and the tip was stop on a 3 way switch....

I have so many spare parts laying around from giging and building over the years that it wouldn’t cost me anything to build one........Thanks again......Jim

Hey Mike,
Just for giggles, hold the switch in the middle position and see if you don’t get “stop”

If you look at the switch, it’s missing a lug for the middle position which would be “stop” on a 3 way switch.....

Since yours is a 2 way switch with no “stop”, what mode is your Vent II set on ?

Thanks again....I know that I’m a PITA but I have to wrap my head around things that I do so it all makes sense...🤓
