Just wondering what size of replacement nylon tuning nuts I would need for my mid-70s Sho-Bud LDG? I tried searching but had trouble finding anything definitive.

If possible, I'd like to find some of the translucent / natural colored ones (rather than the white ones), as these are currently what is on the guitar.

The wrench you use to tighten, or loosen the nylon nut, takes a 3/16" wrench, or nut driver. I think if you can find the nylon, they will work. Very inexpensive in most hardware stores, in the USA.

I should clarify, I'm looking for the inner diameter / pull rod size.

All Sho~Bud's have used a #5 tuning nut from the time they started using them. There are about 5 different lengths over the years but they are all for a #5-40 thread.

Having said that, over the years someone may have used a #4 rod to add or replace one on the guitar so just be aware.

Michael

BTW, I'm out of all #5's at the moment.

The #5 are 7/64 or .109 inches. Not sure about the #4's.

Thanks guys.

Michael, do you think you’ll be getting any #5’s any time soon? It looks like mine are only about 1/2” long, and are drilled right through.

To avoid confusion:

A 1/8"(.125") diameter rod has a #5-40 thread CUT on it. The tuning nut should have a hole that's Ø.109-.115". Some rods are cut undersize due to the improper die being used , improper alignment of the die to the rod, no lubricant, etc., and the proper size nut may not even catch the threads. Just slips right on.

The later Sho~Buds used a Ø.109(7/64") rod with a ROLLED #5-40 thread so don't measure the rod and think that you have a #4-40 thread. It still needs a #5 nut. I know it's confusing for the 'Buds.

A Ø7/64"(.109") rod has a #4-40 thread CUT on it. It needs the hole in the tuning nut to be about Ø.091-.099". Once again someone may have cut the thread too small and the nut can't get a grip.

Finally, a Ø3/32"(.093") rod has a #3-48 thread cut on it and will need a hole diameter of approx. Ø.080-.088".

Now that y'all are thoroughly confused, I'll leave it at that.

Michael

I don't know when I'll get more run. It just depends as to when I can slip them in between all the other stuff.
