I've used reverb for 50 years...time I learned something new...how to add (substitute?) delay into the effects chain...(I'm playing lap steel now, if that matters).
I have to admit, I just bought a Mooer Ana Echo because Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe uses one with her Ric B6 Panda...not because I want to sound like her, but because I have tremendous respect for her taste and ability, far beyond mine...(and because it was really cheap).
The Mooer (I don't have it yet) seems to be mostly relatively short delay times...I'm not interested in fancy U2-like effects, just in enhancing my ambient tone...so this should be fine? How do I use it (typical settings), and can it work with reverb? _________________ https://www.lostsailorspdx.com

Of course delay can and is often used with reverb. You can chain the delay and reverb differently, meaning reverb into delay or delay into reverb
This unit is analog, or that is the claim, hence it will get an analog tone with repeats that are not carbon copies unlike digital, that go down a generation somewhat like the delays of old, mimicking tape as that was the first delay ala Les Paul's tinkering with tape machines.
The Ana can self-oscillate to get outer space tones.
The main thing here is if this unit has the sound you like. It will need experimenting with. It's a basic delay with the new smallish foot print for board clutter.

I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of using effects. In my guitar days, they always seemed to rob some of the true tone of a good guitar and amp from me. That being said, I do have a DD3 I bought when I started the steel thing a couple years ago. And, as always, I'm not a big fan. I get very aggravated at loosing practice/playing time trying to dial in what I think I want - so, it got thrown into the pac-a-seat, and it stays there. My amp guy did big pro audio stage set ups for years, but has retired from it, and is selling off his gear. He has some Yamaha rack mount effects units for a pretty fair price, and I'm considering buying one and playing with it. Maybe this will be something I'll like? We'll see. |

If he's got an SPX90, that would be something to have IMO.

I always us a delay effect and seem to have settled on either a DD2 or a DD3 placed last in the effects chain.
I set it very lightly with a single slap back delay.

I use delay very sparingly. Just a whisper of a single slap at ~300ms or so, and only on songs that have slower single-line melodies that want a little extra "hang time".
Lane Gray had a comment a while back about the use of delay on steel guitar which I really liked. Please allow me to paraphrase as I can't find the original comment:
"Dial in a bit of delay and listen carefully as it ruins all the precise blocking, slide movements and articulations you have practiced for months to perfect, then turn it off again."
YMMV of course. |
