Looking to add to my collection, now that I'm obsessed with the reso.
So what are your MUST HAVE dobro albums. Unless it's something particularly rare or unknown, let's put Jerry Douglas aside for right now..........we can safely assume ALL his recordings are musts!! lol
Whatcha got??
Thanks! |

The Great Dobro Sessions is a must have.
Three Bells, Mike's last album with Jerry and Rob
The Resophonic Rodeo for some 7 string action.
One of my favorite records of all time: Peter Rowan and Jerry Douglas's duet album Yonder
Orville Johnson's Freehand
Six String Swing, Billy Cardine
Skip, Hop, & Wobble. Must have. Jerry Douglas with Edgar Meyer and Russ Barenberg
Stobro's Blues, Ferrell Stowe. For different tuning
Stone Bottom Boogie, Junior Barber. I'd put this in must have category.
Gene Wooten, Don't Look Now |

Check out our German Forum friend, Martin Gross. I'm not sure if he has any albums out but there are many of his videos available on youtube.
Here's his version of "Teach Your Children". Super clean picker - I love his string pulls behind the bar.

Sorry, I could ignore JD! Some of Jerry Douglas' best and often, most beautiful work (IMHO) is on the Transatlantic Sessions DVD series where he is an ensemble player along with some of the best roots musicians in the world.

A few dobro album favorites I didn't see mentioned:
Brother Oswald ("Pete" Kirby)
Memories of Foggy Mountain (Josh Graves)
Friar Tut (Tut Tayler)
also
Dobro/Blues and Bluegrass (Mike Auldridge) - You REALLY have to have this one. |

Beverly King has two or three Oswald style (and sounding) records. Her tunes are simple, easy to learn and great to begin with.
Somebody on Forum may have some of them.
Thanx,

A must have (and I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned yet) is "All Old Friends" by Stacy Phillips....this recording has just about every style of dobro tune and dobro infused tunes spanning a wide variety of genres....and his playing is over the top....f you are learning or entering the realm of dobro, this is an eye opener & game changer....styles he covers are:
Western Swing
Hawaiian
Bluegrass
Blues
Old Time Country
Folk

Tom Swatzell of Mel Bay fame put out a few and it's easy playing stuff. I didn't see his name but with my poor eyes, I could have missed it.

Gene Wooten-Gene Wooten Sings and Plays Dobro
EmmyLou Harris And The Nash Ramblers-Live At The Ryman
Learn how to back up a singer by listening to Al Perkins back up Emmylou on this 1992 live recording. It’s do-able by us mere mortal men.
My current passion is Andy Hall with Infamous String Dusters. |
