Topic: Music shops in New York |

Hi All
Apologies If I have posted this on the wrong page but a quick question..
I will be visiting New York in a few weeks and would like to track down some music shops for a look around, even better if they sell Steel Guitars.
Might stock up on some strings while I'm there.
If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

| Matt Umanov is still in Greenwich village on Bleeker st, and used to have some great old guitars. Most of the 48th shops are closed now uptown. Evidently Rudys music in Soho is awesome, but I've never been. On Broome street. I always loved the lower section of Manhattan the most with old narrow streets. I was born on w4th street so I'm partial. |

The New York scene is really not what it was. The days of going to Staten Island for Mandolin Brothers or going to the village for Matt Umanov's (overpriced) lap steels, or going up to 48th street are all gone.
I don't think you will find any store that has pedal steels. New york isn't what it once was, sadly.

Loved Rudy's on 48th street. Been years since I've been to their soho store but it was pretty nice when they opened it. |

New York is a big state,,You're talking about Manhattan.There's a few stores in the Hudson Valley"upstate N.Y.

There is a store in my town of Westfield, NJ called Golden Age guitars, the owner used to work at Mandolin Brothers. Westfield is about 18 miles west of Manhattan and is accessible by train.

I briefly lived in NYC in the early '90s and just about saw the tail end of that once vibrant retail scene. By then, though, Manny's had become a bit of a supermarket and I was underwhelmed on my first visit.
There were three or four dealers on that street, the stand-out being Rudy's (I bought a '66 Tele from him). Back then, Stan Jay and the gang still held court over on Staten Island and Mandolin Bros was my favourite place to 'kick tyres'.
Rising rents in the city must have been a nail in the coffin for that particular branch of retail.
